I believe success in math depends on a child's ability to not only understand numerical concepts, but to be able to apply those strategies to problems by using mathematical thinking. My approach in this class is to give students the tools they need to be able to solve problems, and then allow them to experiment, fail, and try again until they get the answer. Throughout the year, we work on developing strategies, understanding relationships, and building confidence. As I tell my students,...

They play a game called Three in a Row to practice these strategies.Lesson 10Using Mental MathStudents practice mental math by playing Three in a Row.Week 6Lesson 11Two-Digit AdditionStudents learn the algorithm for adding 2-digit numbers. Then they play a racing game to practice choosing to add with the algorithm or mental math.Lesson 12Two-Digit AdditionStudents continue practicing adding 2-digit numbers with a racing game.Week 7Lesson 13Three-Digit AdditionStudents learn the algorithm for adding 3-digit numbers. Then they play a racing game to practice choosing to add with the algorithm or using mental math.Lesson 14Three-Digit AdditionStudents continue practicing adding 3-digit numbers with a racing game.Week 8Lesson 15Two-Digit SubtractionStudents learn the algorithm for subtracting 2-digit numbers. Then they play a racing game to practice choosing to subtract with the algorithm or using mental math.Lesson 16Two-Digit SubtractionStudents continue practicing subtracting 2-digit numbers with a racing game.Week 9Lesson 17Three-Digit SubtractionStudents learn the algorithm for subtracting 3-digit numbers. Then they play a racing game to practice choosing to subtract with the algorithm or using mental math.Lesson 18Three-Digit SubtractionStudents continue practicing subtracting 3-digit numbers with a racing game.Week 10Lesson 19Addition & Subtraction FluencyStudents play Three in a Row, where they have to decide to add or subtract numbers in order to get three in a row to win.Lesson 20Addition & Subtraction FluencyStudents play a racing game, first to 500, then back to 0, to practice adding and subtracting with either the algorithm or by using mental math.Unit 4Chapter 4: LengthChapter 4: Length4 lessons2 WeeksWeek 11Lesson 21Measuring in CMStudents learn how to measure in centimeters, then go on a Measuring Scavenger Hunt to find items with a given measurement.Lesson 22Measure Me!Students try to guess how long certain measurements are by drawing lines on paper. Then they will use this estimation to estimate, then measure, their own body parts.Week 12Lesson 23Measuring in InchesStudents learn how to measure in inches, then go on a Measuring Scavenger Hunt to find items with a given measurement.Lesson 24Design a MonsterStudents design their own monster, measuring its features.Unit 5Chapter 5: WeightChapter 5: Weight2 lessons1 WeekWeek 13Lesson 25Grams and KilogramsStudents use everyday objects to learn how much a gram and kilogram is. Then they go on scavenger hunt to find objects weighing different amounts in pounds.Unit 6Chapter 6: Multiplication & DivisionChapter 6: Multiplication & Division4 lessons2 WeeksWeek 14Lesson 27Intro to MultiplicationStudents learn the concept that multiplication is repeated addition. They practice by rolling dice and making arrays using manipulatives.Lesson 28Multiplication ManiaStudents play a game where they roll dice and make their own multiplication problems to try to get the highest score.Week 15Lesson 29Intro to Division: SharingStudents learn that division is sharing into equal groups. They use counters to interact with the story The Doorbell Rang. Then they play Division Bingo, where they share a total into a certain number of groups.Lesson 30Intro to Division: GroupingStudents learn that division is also grouping: making each group the same number. They play Division Bingo again, this time grouping instead of sharing.Unit 7Chapter 7: Multiplication & Division of 2, 5, 10Chapter 7: Multiplication & Division of 2, 5, 106 lessons3 WeeksWeek 16Lesson 31Multiplying by 10Students review skip counting by 10, and then play Spin & Multiply to practice multiplying by 10.Lesson 32Multiplying by 5Students review skip counting by 5, and then play Spin & Multiply to practice multiplying by 5.Week 17Lesson 33Multiplying by 2Students review skip counting by 2, and then play Spin & Multiply to practice multiplying by 2.Lesson 34Multiplying by 2, 5, and 10Students learn the game Kaboom, where they practice multiplying their 2s, 5s, and 10s.Week 18Lesson 35The Multiplying and Division ConnectionStudents learn how multiplication and division are related. They use counters to review both grouping and sharing in division problems. They play Clear the Board to practice dividing by 2s, 5s, and 10s.Lesson 36Multiplication and Division PracticeStudents play Clear the Board and Kaboom to practice both division and multiplication problems.
- By the end of the semester, students will know the following: -Adding and Subtracting 2-digit numbers with regrouping -Mulitiplication/Division concepts -Measuring length and weight

Frecuencia: incluidoComentario: incluidoDetalles: Homework will be assigned each week. We will cover a lot in class, however students will still need to practice math at home. I will post the homework assignments on the classroom page at the beginning of each week. Parents can grade the homework at home. We will have a short time during each class to review troubling problems, but will not review all the pages.Evaluación
Frecuencia: incluidoDetalles: Students will be assessed through discussions, homework, and games. Upon request I will provide a written evaluation for your student at the end of the semester.
Students entering this class at the beginning should know how to add and subtract both mentally and by using the algorithm. If either of these are not strong, they WILL get more practice in this course, but they should have been exposed.
Exact materials and pdf print-outs will be supplied each week in the Classroom. For now, students should have the following materials: -Place value blocks, (available here for about $25): https://www.amazon.com/BRABURG-Base-Ten-Blocks-Set/dp/B08JLYL5M5 -10-sided dice (available here for about $10): https://www.amazon.com/ThinkFun-Fun-Teaches-Mental-Skills/dp/B0007LYKX0 -Connecting Cubes (available here for $13): https://www.amazon.com/Didax-Educational-Resources-Unifix-Cubes/dp/B00TP1UA00 -Dimensions 2A workbook (available here for $14): https://www.singaporemath.com/collections/dimensions-math-pk-5/products/dimensions-math-workbook-2a?variant=40979857277117
