Experiencia de clase

In this ongoing class students will turn into problem solvers who have one mission: to solve the math word problem.
These math word problems will use math problems with numbers 1-120.

This class has the same science information as my math problem solvers 1-20 class. The difference is that the word problems include more advanced 2-digit math. That means that we will spend more time on the math problem in this class then in my class that uses math problems with numbers 1-20.

In my classes connection is really important. In this class there will be a maximum of 4 students. I think students learn more when they get to know the teacher, other friends, and are able to feel known in class. I enjoy getting to know each student and encouraging learners to share things with each other. I believe this is part of making learning fun.

The classes do not build upon each other so you are welcome to join any week.

Week 1: Space Addition Word Problem
Week 2: Space Addition Word Problem
Week 3: Volcanos Subtraction Word Problems
Week 4: Volcanos Subtraction Word Problems
Week 5: Oceans Missing Addends ex: 35+__=80
Week 6: Oceans Missing Addends ex: 40+__=70
Week 7: Caves Missing Addends ex: ___+70=85
Week 8: Caves Missing Addends ex: ___+30=110

The type of math problems will repeat in the same pattern but we will explore different places: rainforest, dessert, tundra.

In this class students will work on reading, science, and math skills while working on math problems.

Students will learn how to solve math word problems. This will be a student centered class where learners are encouraged to problem solve and fix errors amongst each other. I've found that students are more engaged in learning math this way because they are the ones learning and teaching each other new concepts.

Learners will be given a math problem which the teacher will read out loud. Then learners are given 5 minutes (depending on the needs of each individual class) to solve this problem. They are encouraged to use tangible ways of coming up with a solution but they are not required to use 1 specific way of answering. If they figure out their answer before the rest of the class they will be encouraged to test their solution by finding a solution to the problem in a different way.

During this time the teacher will not correct errors. This is a student centered class. Therefore, errors will be discussed as a class.

Once students find solutions to the problem they will be encouraged to write their answer in sentence form. This helps students prepare to share their answers out loud. Then students will share their answers out loud. This encourages communication skills in young learners. The teacher will write each answer on the board. If there are different answers then as a class we try to figure out which answer is correct.

Once we have the correct answer the teacher will introduce/review different ways of interacting with the numbers within our problem.

At the end of class we will reflect on our learning.

Learners do not need the ability to read the problem to be able to solve it. Some students struggle with reading while flourishing in math. Giving these students math word problems usually gives them a sense of confidence in the midst of learning reading and comprehension skills. It's a great way to reinforce both reading and math skills.

Orientación para padres
It's important that you let your child solve the problem themselves. They might struggle with this at first, some students might even cry with frustration. But, if they stick with it and figure out the solution they learn how to work through difficulty. It is an empowering thing when they discover this.
