Students between the ages of *ten* and *fourteen* will connect concepts in two and three dimensional geometry using measurement, estimation, spatial reasoning and more by actively designing and creating their own mythical dragon creature.

Class One: starting with two intersecting lines, students will be challenged to find the centre of their drawing and begin to construct simple, symmetric shapes to create the outline of their dragon. Using their rulers and their own spatial reasoning, students use side and angle bisection to map out the skull, jaw, neck and horns of their dragon, while learning about some of the geometry that underlies the physical structure of real life reptiles that resemble the mythical dragon.

Class Two: designing the details of a dragon includes understanding how to represent cross-sectional diagonals on a cone, how to create a waving checkerboard pattern inspired by the scales of real life snakes, and investigating the twisted horns of a real narwhal to create the realistic details that complete the mythical dragon.

Class Three: students will present their drawings and be invited to give feedback on their classmates' work. There will be opportunities to explore the role of math in designing dragons for graphic art, illustration, animation and even engineering projects.

Spatial reasoning is a student's ability to think about objects in three dimensions and to form conclusions about those objects such as their proportional size in real life, and their true dimensions when considering things like perspective. Students who develop good spatial reasoning abilities are better able to think about how an object will look when rotated, which is a key skill in higher sciences such as organic chemistry, cell biology, and calculus.

*IMPORTANT*: PLEASE READ THE SUPPLY LIST BELOW AND ENSURE THAT STUDENTS ATTEND THIS CLASS WITH THE REQUIRED SUPPLIES. THANKS!!! :-)

Orientación para padres
This class requires the continuous use of fine motor skills which are generally not sufficiently developed until students are AT LEAST TEN years of age. This class is specifically designed for students from age 10 to 14. Therefore, the minimum required age to register is 10 yrs and the maximum age is 14 yrs. Thank you for respecting the age range of the class.
Lista de útiles escolares
Students should bring letter-sized UNLINED paper (standard sized), pencil and eraser for drawing and any type of coloring art supplies they would like to use (pencils, crayons, ink, markers), as well as a STANDARD SIZED RULER that measures in either inches or centimeters or both. The slideshow of the lecture will be provided to all students after the class so that they can continue to review how to use math to draw some interesting artwork.
Recursos externos
Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.

With degrees in Math, Music and Education, I have been teaching students for over thirty years.

I teach classes that offer learners a chance to experience the creative side of math by putting theory into practice to design things like dragons, anime characters, castles and more. My classes are activity-based and encourage students to learn through hands-on projects that mimic real life math-in-action done by architects, engineers and designers.
