This is a flex class with daily communication posts, activities, resources, and/or assignments to keep students engaged. Although there are not live classes, students will have the opportunity for live 1:1 teacher support if needed. In addition, student/ teacher interaction will take place through a variety of discussion topics on Outschool and Nearpod, real-life scenario questions relevant to the skills covered in this class, and other activities (Quizizz, Kahoot, Prodigy, Arcademics, etc) to ensure high quality interaction between all participants.

Students will receive a progress report to identify and tackle any challenges. Individualized instruction and extra support are provided to accommodate all learners. With effort, success will be evident in this class.

Students will receive and be responsible for watching prerecorded videos, reviewing handouts, and completing activities and assignments weekly for each skill taught in this course. Email is an alternative option to receive responses in a timely manner. There will be posts on the classroom page to keep communication open. This course is similar to the live class, but is an alternative means for learners who cannot participate in the scheduled live classes due to scheduling conflicts, comfort level or unfamiliarity with the live version of the class. This also provides learners an opportunity to engage with the teacher and classmates through weekly guided discussions. I will provide ongoing feedback to learners and respond to questions or concerns. This flexible learning course will offer a sense of community so we can each learn from each other's observations, thinking, and experiences.

Students will use and show an understanding of proportional reasoning and rational numbers. Students will also practice solving problems involving volume and surface area. Solving linear equations and inequalities are covered along with the concept of slope as rate of change. Throughout the course, students will be encouraged to communicate and reason mathematically and become problem solvers. Opportunities for each student to acquire the specialized vocabulary and language patterns of mathematics are provided in a variety of methods (video clips, notes, graded worksheets).

Here is a tentative schedule and may be adjusted if needed. Classes can also be extended to allow extra time for student success.

Weeks 1 and 2:
-Negative exponents for powers of ten
-Scientific notation
-Rational numbers
-Square roots
-Absolute value of rational numbers
.
Weeks 3 and 4:
-Practical problems involving operations with rational numbers.
-Solve single-step and multistep practical problems, using proportional reasoning.

Weeks 5 and 6:
-Volume and surface area of rectangular prisms and cylinders; and
-Relationship between corresponding sides and corresponding angles of similar quadrilaterals and triangles.
-Compare and contrast quadrilaterals based on their properties and determine unknown side lengths or angle measures
-Apply translations and reflections of right triangles or rectangles in the coordinate plane.

Weeks 7 and 8:
-Determine the theoretical and experimental probabilities of an event
-Represent data in a histogram, stem-and-leaf plots, line plots, and circle graphs.

Weeks 9 through 12:
-Determine and graph the slope, m, as rate of change in a proportional relationship between two quantities and write an equation in the form y = mx to represent the relationship
-Evaluate algebraic expressions for given replacement values of the variables
-Solve two-step linear equations in one variable, including practical problems that require the solution of a two-step linear equation in one variable.
-Solve one- and two-step linear inequalities in one variable, involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

Students should try to solve problems independently. Self-discipline and motivation are necessary for success. Students will be expected to watch videos, complete homework, complete quizzes, and ask/answer questions that are posted in the classroom.

PREREQUISITES: Students should be comfortable with fractions, decimal operations, basic foundations of algebra and rational numbers.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will use and show an understanding of proportional reasoning and rational numbers, practice solving problems involving volume and surface area, solve linear equations and inequalities, and understand slope as rate of change. Throughout the course, students will also be encouraged to communicate and reason mathematically to become critical thinkers and problem solvers.
