Maps can be mysterious, they can be informative, and they can be imaginative. Maps are also a fantastic way to get children excited about using their developing literacy skills. Each class is divided into two parts First we take a close-up look at one type of map, noticing how it includes symbols, words, numbers, lines, and drawings to represent information. Then we use ideas and inspiration from the map that we explored together to make maps of our own. Please note that I do NOT lead the class in step by step to make a map. Each learner is invited to make a map in their own way using their own ideas and creativity. I help brainstorm, provide examples for inspiration and give lots of support and encouragement. As we work on our maps, I am available as a resource. As learners share the maps they are working on, I point out connections with the map we explored together or ask questions to encourage learners to add new details. The goal is not to have a completed map by the end of each class, but to get started on the map making process together. I hope learners leave class excited to continue with map-making at home. Learners are welcome to join at any time! Topic List: Week of August 22nd: Hiking maps Week of August 29th: Treasure maps Week of September 5th: Zoo Maps Week of September 12: Street Maps Week of September 19th: Museum maps Week of September 26th: Train maps Week of October 3rd: Country maps If you have taken my one-time "Marvelous Maps" class, this ongoing class follows a similar format, but goes into more depth looking at the maps as well as discussing strategies for making our own maps. I also offer a similar Flexible Schedule class which offers 4 weeks of exploring and making maps: https://outschool.com/classes/marvelous-maps-playful-paths-to-literacy-AbNiYCe4?usid=3CuwGyJY&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link
Metas de aprendizaje
The overarching goal of this class is to spark children's excitement for using their current literacy skills in playful and meaningful ways both as they participate in class and afterwards at home. I believe that learning to read and write is a process that develops gradually with support, time and authentic opportunities to use their developing skills. The way each child engages with the activities in this class will depend on their stage of literacy development (they may be drawing, writing letters and/or words, recognizing symbols, letters and/or words). The class is designed to support the child in their current stage of development and to inspire them to use their current skills in new ways. Learners will also learn map vocabulary, some of the ways maps can be used and different types of maps that exist.
