Locura por los mamíferos marinos con un científico marino (¡y preguntas y respuestas sobre su carrera!) FLEX

Experiencia de clase
In this FLEX course, we will focus on the basics of marine mammal science, as well as techniques used for researching these diverse animals. What is a marine mammal? How are they different from fish? How in the world can scientists collect information about them? This is a beginner class dedicated to learning all about those dolphins, whales, and manatees that we all know and love. *This is a flexible schedule class, so there are no live meetings. Class will be held on your own time via recorded lessons.* YouTube links will be provided on Monday morning of each week to view the pre-recorded class video. Each class will be dedicated to a 1-2 new research techniques that are used to study marine mammals. The last week of class will be dedicated to answering questions about the marine science field and education on specific marine mammals that students have chosen throughout the previous 3 weeks! Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about anything related to the field and their future, as well! Any questions related to marine science and mammalogy will be answered in the week 4 video. What schooling is necessary? What jobs are available? What does a typical day for a marine mammalogist look like? How do dolphins sleep? Why aren't whale sharks whales? I am here to answer anything your student is interested in! Week 4 video will be recorded based on the questions and interests from the previous 3 weeks. Schedule will be as follows: Week 1: Marine Mammal Overview and Satellite Tagging/Time-Depth Recorders Week 2: Acoustic Analysis and Genetic Sampling Week 3: Aerial Systems and Photo Identification Week 4: Marine Science Q&A and Discussion of specific marine mammals (chosen by students!) As discussed above, throughout our time together, students will be encouraged to think of questions in the classroom related to science careers and how to get involved in the field of marine mammalogy (or marine science). These questions will be answered in week 4 of this class. Students will also be encouraged to chose specific marine mammals that they wish to learn more about. These animals will be taught and discussed in week 4, as well. This class is suitable for all levels!

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have over 5 years of research experience with the species discussed in this course. My research focuses on photo identification, acoustic analysis, genetic sampling and satellite tagging/time-depth recording. We will discuss all of these techniques in the class.
