Do you have a child who can’t get enough facts about sharks, whales, and other mysterious creatures of the deep? Explore these animals and discover even more about the ocean in this Marine Biology science unit. Through engaging lessons, stunning videos, simple experiments, and interactive learning, children will explore and gain a greater appreciation for some of the smallest as well as the largest creations on the planet.

This course will last 14 weeks.

Topics For Course Session:
Week 1: Introductions, Ice Breaker Activities, Lesson 1 – Ocean Characteristics, Favorite Ocean Creature Drawing/Discussion
Week 2: Lesson 2 – Ocean Zones, Ocean Zone Oil Layer Lab 
Week 3: Lesson 3 – Tides and Intertidal Zones, Create A Water Table Lab
Week 4: Lesson 4 – Marine Life, Focus On Specific Marine Life That Interest The Student (Research, Create a Poster To Educate The Class On the Animal's Diet/Life Span/Location)
Week 5: Lesson 5 – Coral Reefs, Importance Of Reef
Week 6: Lesson 6 – Marine Invertebrates, Part 1
Week 7: Lesson 7 – Marine Invertebrates, Part 2
Both Marine Invertebrate Weeks We Will Focus On Types Of Invertebrates, Location, Life Span, Environmental Factors
Week 8: Lesson 8 – Marine Reptiles
Week 9: Lesson 9 – Fish-Anatomy Of A Fish, Types, Recreational Fishing, Fish As Food
Week 10: Lesson 10 – Sharks, Life Span, Tracking Methods NOAA Uses To Track Sharks
Week 11: Lesson 11 – Marine Mammals, Part 1
Week 12: Lesson 12 – Marine Mammals, Part 2
These Two Weeks Will Focus On Types Of Marine Mammals, Location, Diet, Life Span, Environmental Factors
Week 13-14 Craft Weeks, Review, Final Exam

This course will follow a flex format. This means the class does not meet for live sessions, the lessons will be on the class wall for the student to log in each week to complete. A full week's worth of lessons will be uploaded each Sunday night by 10pm EST. 
The class wall will feature ocean creatures to draw, to create ocean scenes with, to create 6 box comic strip stories about, and to discuss in detail with other students on the class wall.

This course does involve labs, so please look over the supply list. If your child is allergic to any ideas, please do not use. YouTube, Nearpod, Padlet and Google programs will be used for summary and comprehension purposes but no account or additional work is needed in regards to these.

• 9"x13" glass baking dish
• 3 tall glasses or jars
• 8 Tbsp salt
• 8 Tbsp sugar

• 3 fresh eggs
• Dry-erase marker
•clay or play-dough 
•assorted legos to make a model of a fish or ocean creature
• Water (including warm tap water)
• Glue stick
• Scissors
• 15 index cards for each child
• Crayons, pens, markers, or other drawing materials
• Stapler or binder clip
• Variety pack of seashells (with starfish and sand
dollars, if possible), available at craft stores or online
Scissors
• 1 small can of tomato juice or bottle of lemon
juice
• Tablespoon and teaspoon measuring spoons
• poster board
• 8 paper cups
• About 2 c ice
• About 2 c shortening
• 4 quart-sized zipper bags
• Large mixing bowl
• Timer/stopwatch
• Spoon
• Permanent marker

Access to a printer would be helpful, but not required. If you do not have a printer, please let me know. I have lots of templates that I share with the group.
