Did you like Wall-E, the Hunger Games, Divergent, or Games of Fire series? From the Goodreads.org webpage, "Lord of the Flies, with its high-stakes battle between chaos and control, will engage students in their own explorations about human nature and the myriad issues we face today." Readers will make comparisons to other popular books and movies that have a similar theme of survival. Raders will engage in the critical reading, writing, thinking, and speaking required by many language standards. Readers will analyze the characters in the story. Readers will look at several passages to discuss the literary devices that the author used to develop the story. My method of analyzing this story is to focus on a few key events and topics throughout the novel. I believe that by studing a few topics carefully that students will find the text easier to read and also walk away with a good understanding. My goal is to help the reader make connections with events in the story to modern events and other books or movies they've recently read or watched.

Orientación para padres
The story's main theme is about survival, community, and obstacles. The opening chapter begins with students having been the victims of an airplane accident where different British students are left to survive on their own as they await rescue. As you can imagine, not all goes well. There are several detailed sections that violent. Not all of the students survive to be rescued.
One of the main elements is an unknown beast that scares several of the younger boys. Because the term is "the Beast", some readers may choose to bring up the Christian devil or references to tthe beast in the Christian biible. If this becomes a topic of discussion, I will gladly enable comparisons to what the readers know from other books that they have read, including the Christian bible. I will not introduce this topic during the book study.
Violence is a key theme in the book including the killing of one of the boys and of a wild pig. The pig's head is put upon a spike and becomes the "Lord of the Flies." As a parent, you know your learner best, and can decide if this book is an appropriate read.
