In this course, I will be teaching the "Loop, Swoop, & Pull" method of tying shoes. I will use a rhyme that your students can recite as they are manipulating their little fingers with their laces. By using their fingers while saying the rhyme, students are engaging different parts of the brain which will help them learn faster and remember how to do it in the future. I will show the steps slowly and repetitively throughout the entire class. All your child needs is a shoe! They will not be wearing the shoe, as it is more beneficial to learn how to tie the shoe off their feet first. Make sure the laces of the shoe are long enough to be manipulated by the child. I would also recommend shoelaces that are stiff, as this will help the loops stay up for the child. Upon completion, resources will be posted in the classroom to help your child remember the rhyme, and pictures to help visualize how to tie. Even if your child does not learn to tie during the class, you will be left with countless resources to help your child. Let's get to tying! **Remember families! All children develop at their own pace. Even if we think our children are ready to tie their shoes, they may not be developmentally ready just yet. Do not get discouraged if your child has a tough time! Even though popcorn is prepared in the same pot, with the same oil, and the same cooking conditions, they all pop at different times! Your child's turn to pop will come! :) Here are some tips to know if your child is ready to tie their shoes: - They can manipulate things with their fingers… like buttons, zippers, or lacing beads. - They are using scissors to cut paper. - They can draw stick figures and simple pictures with a writing utensil. - They are using a fork and spoon to eat with. (Recordings of completed classes available upon request.)

Shoe with laces (already laced in the shoe) that the child can manipulate during class to tie the laces with the teacher - I would recommend an adult shoe to start with! Try to choose a shoe with laces that are stiffer to begin with.
