NOTE: This ongoing class needs a minimum of two students for the class to continue. It will be repeated in January. If you haven't seen the video I have linked to this page, please see it for a brief description of the course. Click on the picture to begin the video. Students will be captivated while learning about how Laura Ingalls lived during the 1800s. This class is for beginners. They will listen each week to a reading of one of the My First Little House books and practice implementing some reading strategies that they can use as they begin learning how to read. Mixed media will be used. I will use a variety of visuals and interactive activities to captivate them during this learning adventure. An eager mind and a listening ear is all that is required for this class. Each week there will be activities and handouts that we will do in class together. I will include subjects such as math, geography, writing, and science whenever possible. This is a class that will be easily relatable to the students because Laura is the age of the students. I am excited to bring to life the adventures of Laura. I encourage your child to have a 3 ring binder folder to store all their handouts in. I will include a cover for the front of the folder. This way, if they attend each week, they will have a complete folder filled with things they learned from this ongoing course. I am super excited about this. The My First Little House Books can be purchased on Amazon if you would like to have your own copy. Here is the order that I will be reading the books. Week 1 (8/1) - Introduction of the Ingalls and story that I wrote with Laura as the narrator. - Pictures and Trunk activity. Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn about pioneer life and the life of Laura Ingalls. Note that there is not any racism in these early books. They focus on her home and family life and their day to day activities. Students will learn the strategies that make reading more interesting and entertaining. They will learn to ask questions, evaluate, make connections, monitor, infer, and predict. All of these strategies will help them through the years in school and outside of school. Instead of just listening to the story, we dissect it and pull out the significant parts.

I enjoy teaching classes that have a human interest aspect to them. I have found this to be an easy way for the students to become interested very quickly in what I am teaching them and then they are much easier to teach the “boring” things too. They tend to not realize they are learning that “boring” stuff because it isn’t boring anymore. I enjoy teaching about Pioneer life and especially Little House on the Prairie. I have visited much of where she lived. I hope to share with your child the joy of learning about Laura and her way of life.
