Esta clase a su propio ritmo de 4 semanas presenta a los estudiantes una multitud de canciones y composiciones influenciadas por el agua y el mar, y nos ayuda a descubrir qué sonidos instrumentales nos recuerdan al agua y por qué.

Tarea
1-2 horas por semana. Students have the option of completing assignments with or without a grade. All completed assignments will receive comments if submitted during the four week course time period.
Evaluación
All completed assignments will receive comments as a form of assessment if submitted during the four week course time period.
Calificación
Students who complete all assignments will be given a certificate of completion. Grades are available for assignments by request if completed in the four week course time period.

Experiencia de clase

Welcome to Listen to the Sea - music inspired by water and the sea! In this fun and interactive online course, we will explore the various musical styles and genres that have been inspired by water and the sea and we will discuss the unique musical qualities that make each one effective. 

Each week will have: 

A Class Video:
Sonya will post a video class about the topic of the week. 

Listening posts:
Sonya will post a songs or pieces of music for you to listen to and think about with  open ended questions for us to discuss in our the outschool classroom. 

A Project:
Sonya will post the project of the week with both a written and video explanation. Projects are different each week and are always related to the video class and music postings. Possible projects may include creating a piece of art or a poem in response to a piece of music, writing or creating a presentation about a musician or piece of music, making a playlist. Students will be asked to post their assignments on our Outschool class page to share with the class.

Deadlines are flexible though the course is created to last 4 weeks. 

Teacher Interaction: 
Sonya will provide feedback, grade/assess assignments and reply to questions within the 4-week course period. 
Sonya will aim to reply to questions or comments posted in the classroom within 24 hours and will give project/assignment feedback within 3 days of submission where possible.

Students will learn how instrumental colors, textures, and timbres can represent the sea and water in music.
Students will learn to identify and describe various water sounds and understand their use in a musical context.

Lección 1:
Listen to the sea: Class Video
 How could the sea and water be represented by music? We will talk about instrumental colors, textures and timbres. 
Lección 2:
Listen to the Sea: Sounds of the sea itself
 Let’s listen to recordings of water: splashing, pouring, the ocean, under water 
Lección 3:
Listen to the Sea: Project
 How would you create a piece of musical art that uses water? Would you make audio or video recordings? Would you draw your ideas? Would you write them down as a recipe or instructions? 

Without creating a mess for you and your family, create a piece of musical art about or using water and present it in a way that works for you. 
Lección 4:
The Sea Shanty & Folk Song: Class Video
 We will investigate what a sea shanty and a folk song is and how they relate to each other.

Sonya Knussen is a professional singer, music educator and composer with degrees in performance from Boston University (BMus), The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (MA), Trinity Laban (PGDip with distinction) and The Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University (GPD). She has received additional training in vocal performance, movement, drama and stage presence from The Knack at ENO Baylis (English National Opera’s education program). 

Sonya has 20+ years of teaching experience. She the sole voice teacher at Severn School in MD where she taught private middle and high school vocal students and she was on the faculty of the vocal arts magnet program for Anne Arundel county. Her high school students have given lecture recitals in French repertoire, won leading roles in multiple school musicals, participated in performance and master classes, gained places to colleges such as Berklee College of Music and won music scholarships.

As a music educator Sonya runs music composition workshops for students ages 7-18, she has taught ear-training and sight-singing at the college level and has taught classroom music to students ages 3-18. She has grown up emersed in music having come from a family of musicians, attending rehearsals, concerts and operas from a young age and eventually participating in them as well as assisting in the production of audio and television recordings.
