This is an ongoing chess club. Students are encouraged to enroll in Introduction to Chess Tactics and/or Introduction to Chess Strategy along with this class. Students will spend most of their time playing coached games with each other. Coaching will include suggestions and guiding questions about strategies and positions. Tips, based on the days games, will also often be posted in the classroom. Students are expected to know the rules of chess before joining this class. It is also helpful to know something about chess notation, as we use this notation to discuss moves. Anyone within the age range may join this class, but those who either do not have a known chess rating or who have an equivalent FIDE rating of 1250 or below will find it most useful. Students will need to create an account on https://lichess.org in order to participate in this class. Parents should enable "Kid Mode" by going to https://lichess.org/account/kid. Lichess user names will be shared with others in the classroom so that we can play games with each other! Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I tutor math and run roleplaying games on Outschool. I have 11 years of classroom teaching experience plus 6 years experience developing content for McGraw-Hill and other education publishers. I have been playing, writing, and running roleplaying games for more than 30 years.
I customize math tutoring to the learner's goal. This goal might be to improve grades in a current course, to prepare for the ACT, SAT, AP, or other standardized math test, to prepare for an upcoming course, to support a home school curriculum, or to seek enrichment.
When running roleplaying games (such as Dungeons & Dragons), I help learners to develop their creativity, empathy, problem-solving skills, collaboration skills, and resilience. Although I always keep my roleplaying games fun, I also value what they can teach and how they can help learners to grow. I also teach a small set of game design courses for those learners who are interested in running their own games.
Outside of Outschool, I enjoy reading, traveling, and biking. I am always looking for the next adventure!
