Experiencia de clase

NOTE: Learners will be expected to be set up with their canvas, acrylic paints, palette, water, and paint brushes before class starts. I will not be able to wait to allow students to set up during class time.

In this class, students will be guided in using various techniques to create a wide variety of techniques using acrylic paints. Each class will be taken up with a step-by-step tutorial that will allow students to practice these techniques actively and add their own personal flair when and where they feel like it.
While students will be guided on what basic brushes to use and what basic colors to use, they will have freedom to divert from my instructions to best suit what they are comfortable doing. I'm here to guide them and to help them learn, but art is a flexible subject and I will leave room for creative freedom if they would like to make their own alterations to their paintings.

Some of these classes will require students to pre-prep their canvases: for instance, paint them black. I will let the students know ahead of time and post reminders in the classroom.

The class will be broken down into the following lessons:
Week 1: Fingerpainted Sunset (Acrylic safety and a fun, messy introduction)
Week 2: Balloons in the Sky (Getting familiar with the texture of paint and how it blends and layers)
Week 3: Four Seasons Tree (Using masking tape to create clear sections)
Week 4: Geometric Gradients (Fading and blending)
Week 5: Rainbow Waterfall (Mixing colors, only using red, blue, yellow, black, and white)
Week 6: Lone Pine at Night (Reflections and focal point)
Week 7: City Skyline (A lesson in value)
Week 8: Underwater Scene (Background, midground, foreground, and focal point)
Week 9: Time of Day Tree (Lighting and shading)
Week 10: Bamboo Forest (Value and distance)
Week 11: Desert Sunset (Painting clouds)
Week 12: Phoenix (Silhouettes and blending)
Week 13: Misty Mountains (Gradients, value, and tone using a single color)
Week 14: Solar System: Pick your own color! (Creating depth and value through shading) !Black canvas!
Week 15: Beach Sunrise (Horizon line and vanishing point)
Week 16: Lone Candle (Value and intense light) !Black canvas!
Week 17: Northern lights (Blending and Value)
Week 18: Tell me what to paint! We'll create a landscape together using input form each student.

Students will have a chance to become familiar with acrylics and learn techniques such as blending, mixing, layering, taping sections, using different brushes to create different effects. They will learn to create depth, shadow, light, value, contrast, and color harmony in their paintings. Additionally, they will learn specific techniques such as how to create pine trees, clouds, the illusion of water reflecting on a surface, light reflecting in the water, etc.

Lista de útiles escolares
18 8x10 canvases (Either board or wrapped. I will be using board, but wrapped will be more than welcome)
Full set of brushes (I can provide a link to the exact brushes I'm using upon request, but my instructions will be in the form of "a very small round brush" or "a large, flat-tipped brush" etc. The only requirement is that there is a wide variety of brushes.)
Set of acrylic paints (Again, I can provide a link upon request, but as long as students at least have white, black, blue, brown, purple, green, red, orange, and yellow, they should be able to follow along by mixing colors as needed.)
Cup for water
Painting towel
Paper towels
Optional - easel (This might make it easier for me to track progress if learners have it facing their webcam)
Recursos externos
Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
My name is Crystal, and I teach art, creative writing, and tabletop role playing. My first teaching job began in 2015 at a preschool, where I was the head of the after school program and summer program for children ages five to twelve. In 2018, I began teaching art at a private school for grades K through 8th. I have since taught at an art gallery, a kids' college summer program, and have also done private lessons. I am currently in the process of illustrating a series of children's books titled "Dreamland Critter Adventures," as well as writing my own YA novels. I have experience beta reading and editing original stories and fanfiction written by children between the ages of 9 to 17.

I believe that the skill of an artist (whether a visual artist or an author) isn't measured by their work in and of itself, but by the rate at which they are willing to improve.
Teaching art and creative writing is such a joy because I not only get to experience the wonderful creativity of others in action, but I also have the chance to provide my students with tools that they can take and use as they see fit. My goal is not to show students how to do what I do, but rather to teach them concepts and methods they can use throughout their artistic endeavors.
