There will be no formal assessment; however, we will take the time to show each other our artwork several times throughout the class to celebrate and encourage each other's progress and results. I'll watch for the opportunity to share any extra tips needed throughout our lesson.Experiencia de clase

No prior drawing or painting experience needed because I'll be leading each child step-by-step through each part of our snowman project. We'll chat about snowmen as we introduce ourselves and see if any of the children have ever built one out of snow. I'll even share my own experience building snowmen to help them imagine some of their possibilities as they draw and paint their own snowman scene. However, snowman-building experience is not necessary to be successful in this class. Before we start drawing, I'll show them a variety of my snowmen paintings to help inspire their creative minds. I'll encourage lots of student participation as we discuss the parts of a snowman as we draw one. Our project has 3 main parts: We'll use pencils first, then our oil pastels (crayons may be substituted) and finish with our watercolor paints. As we switch from pencil to oil pastels, we'll discuss how this type of tool helps our paint colors stay in place and not run together and the special ingredient in the oil pastels that makes it a great choice. I'll be drawing and painting along with the students, and they will be given a lot of choices throughout the lesson. Each child will have a unique snowman and might enjoy naming him or her. We'll look at everyone's artwork several times during the lesson and celebrate and encourage each other's progress and results.

Students will learn how to draw a snowman scene and will be encouraged to personalize their own unique piece of artwork with several options throughout our process. They will also learn a mixed media process of using pencils, oil pastels and watercolor paints and the reasons these products work well together for our project.

pencil, eraser, sharpener 9" x 12" Watercolor Paper (or similar size such as 8" x 10") A set of Watercolor Paints (just a simple set of 8 or 16 colors) A few Watercolor Paint Brushes in different sizes (Watercolor Brushes are extremely soft--the bristles bend when put under a stream of water) Oil Pastels in a variety of colors (be sure they are not the type that can be blended with water--it would say it on the package if it is) Water in an open cup, can or jar Paper Towels Optional Substitution: (If your child does not already have a set of oil pastels, crayons could be used instead.)

Hi, I'm Susan Garrison, a professional artist who also loves teaching kids! I've been drawing & painting all my life and teaching children for the past 3 decades. After earning my BS Degree in Art Education K-12 from Middle Tennessee State University, I've enjoyed teaching children 2D & 3D art lessons at my own art studio, online, and in public and private schools in grades K-12 in Tennessee and South Carolina. One of my specialties has been curriculum development at each of those schools. On weekends, my husband and I even work as a team to DJ weddings and receptions.
I love breaking art projects down into bite-size pieces of simple lines & shapes for children as I lead them through the lesson step-by-step, while still encouraging options along the way so that every piece is unique. Choosing a variety of my classes will help your child develop skills and techniques for creating realistic pieces as well as tap into & build upon the beauty of his or her imagination & creative mind. My class offerings include a variety of styles & use many types of art tools & surfaces. Some classes focus on famous artists & their styles to inspire our artwork. Blending those experiences help form a well-rounded young artist.
