We won't have a homework assignment, but if your child is not finished painting by the end of our time together, that would be something easily finished even after our class ends. We will have covered all the major steps, but there may be a small section a student needs to finish filling in. Also, don't be surprised if your child would like to continue painting other fish or even experimenting with painting on a dark surface independently for days after our class has ended!
Evaluación
There will be no formal assessment; however, we will take the time to hold up our paintings and celebrate and encourage each other several times throughout the lesson and at the end of class.

Experiencia de clase

Goldfish are so beautiful and lots of fun to paint! No worries for beginners -- No prior painting experience needed because I'll lead each child step-by-step through a creative goldfish painting. We'll chat about goldfish as we introduce ourselves and get settled in at the beginning of class with our supplies. We'd love to know if your child has a pet goldfish, but that is definitely not necessary to be successful with this painting!

I'll show the students some of my fish paintings and explain that I'll paint along with them and walk them through each step to create their own painting. I'll teach them a paint sketching technique to use instead of drawing with a pencil for this lesson. We'll discuss the basic parts this fish as we paint and I'll encourage student participation in our discussions.

Students have many choices throughout the lesson for the fish and the background. I'll share my best tips with them as we paint together. We'll also look at each other's paintings several times throughout the lesson to celebrate our progress and encourage each other. Having them show their work to me in different stages of our process also helps me know whether to give some extra tips along the way.

***Some Important Tips to help your child be prepared BEFORE this lesson: Your child may use a white or black canvas in this class. However, I'll be demonstrating on a BLACK CANVAS. (Students will learn some great tips about how our background colors affect our paint colors. They will be able to observe this while I demonstrate, but would understand best by experience, so although your child may use a white surface, I recommend your child to have a black surface to paint. Please see the supply list for painting surface options & for some simple directions on how to change a white canvas surface to black a day or two before class.) ***Also, these acrylic paint colors are important to have for this lesson: White, Black, Yellow, Orange, Red plus a variety of other colors for the background.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn how to paint a goldfish while also learning about paint sketching techniques and tips for how to troubleshoot paint color issues on a black surface. Students will also learn some differences in types of acrylic brushes and which ones are best for specific parts of our painting.

Lista de útiles escolares
(Please see the attached PDF with photos of the basic supplies that might help you gather the best materials for this class. However, please understand that the photo shows a white canvas instead of the black one that is needed for this specific lesson.)

1 BLACK SURFACE SUITABLE FOR ACRYLIC PAINTS:
8" x 10" BLACK Canvas (the type that has primed [coated BLACK] canvas stretched over a wooden frame & stapled to the wood on the back is my preferred type - you'll also be able to find some that are stapled to the side of the wood frame. Other options listed below would work well, too.)

OPTIONS instead of the 8" x 10" BLACK Stretched Canvas listed above:
8" x 10" BLACK Canvas Panel or Canvas Board (It will not be as thick as the stretched canvas and will feel more solid like the canvas is mounted/glued to a stiff cardboard.)
OR an 8" x 10" piece of BLACK Acrylic Canvas Paper that usually comes in a pad of multiple sheets.
OR cut a BLACK Foam Board down to 8" x 10"
OR buy a White Canvas or Canvas Panel and Paint it Solid Black with Acrylic Paint at least 1 day before our class so that it has plenty of time to dry completely before your child uses it in our class.
[Please Note: If your child brings a white surface instead of a black surface to paint on, he/she will still be able to participate in class but will just learn some of the tips by watching my demonstration instead of trying it themselves. There will also be more background area to finish painting after class ends.]

ACRYLIC PAINTS: (not tempera, watercolor or oil)
Each child will need WHITE, BLACK, YELLOW, ORANGE & possibly RED for this fish. However, a variety of other colors will be best for the background such as Blue, Green, Purple, Brown. Store brands in tubes are a good consistency. (If you need to reduce the number of paints you purchase, be sure to have Blue, Red, Yellow, White & Black since many other colors can be mixed using those.)

PAPER PLATE to use as a paint palette (or a plastic paint palette if you already have one)

ACRYLIC PAINT BRUSHES in a variety of sizes. Include a couple of ROUGH Flat Brushes - a medium & a small one (looks like a square on the tip but bristles are rough and a little prickly to the touch. Also include a couple of very small SMOOTH Acrylic Brushes (1 very small Round brush like a pencil tip shape and 1 slender Flat Square Shape)

WATER in a metal can, plastic cup or glass jar.

Hi, I'm Susan Garrison, a professional artist who also loves teaching kids! I've been drawing & painting all my life and teaching children for the past 3 decades. After earning my BS Degree in Art Education K-12 from Middle Tennessee State University, I've enjoyed teaching children 2D & 3D art lessons at my own art studio, online, and in public and private schools in grades K-12 in Tennessee and South Carolina. One of my specialties has been curriculum development at each of those schools. On weekends, my husband and I even work as a team to DJ weddings and receptions.

I love breaking art projects down into bite-size pieces of simple lines & shapes for children as I lead them through the lesson step-by-step, while still encouraging options along the way so that every piece is unique. Choosing a variety of my classes will help your child develop skills and techniques for creating realistic pieces as well as tap into & build upon the beauty of his or her imagination & creative mind. My class offerings include a variety of styles & use many types of art tools & surfaces. Some classes focus on famous artists & their styles to inspire our artwork. Blending those experiences help form a well-rounded young artist.

I delight in helping children enjoy the whole creative process that leads to a lifetime of creativity and not just the end results of a single painting. A child's imagination is valued greatly and will be encouraged in our lessons.
