In this engaging class, students will be introduced to word families, and learn to read by sounding out words through segmenting and blending. We will be using fun slides and games for an interactive experience that will help learners gain fundamental reading skills and become proficient readers. We will be focusing on one-syllable, three-letter (cvc) words, and also use fun decodable readers and worksheets that will help students practice what they have learned. ================= Word families are groups of words that share the same endings such as -at (cat, bat, hat), -ed (bed, fed, red) etc. and they also rhyme. Learning word families help students recognize that many words share common patterns that enable them to progress from recognizing individual sounds to reading entire words. Throughout the course, students will learn over 170 cvc words. ================= Class Schedule: Week 1: Short “a” word families: -at, -an Week 2: Short “a” word families: -ag, -ap Week 3: Short “a” word families: -am, -ab Week 4: Short “a” word families: -ad, -ax Week 5: Short “e” word families: -et, -ed Week 6: Short “e” word families: -eg, -en Week 7: Short “i” word families: -it, -id Week 8: Short “i” word families: -ig, -ip Week 9: Short “i” word families: -im, -ix Week 10: Short “o” word families: -ot, -op Week 11: Short “o” word families: -og, -ob Week 12: Short “o - u” word families: -ox, -ut Week 13: Short “u” word families: -ug, -um Week 14: Short “u” word families: -ub, -un Week 15: Short “u” word families: -ud, -up After the last word family the class will loop back and will restart the topics listed above. ================= This is a fun class with lots of opportunity for interaction, engagement and discussion. Parents will be provided a downloadable PDF to print each week. Printing the worksheet is optional, however please make sure to bring a writing paper, notebook or a whiteboard to class. ================= This class is perfect for homeschooling students, after-school practice and even for ESL learners. There is no prerequisite, and students can join, pause or leave at any time. ================ By completing this class learners will: - learn letter sounds - develop phonemic awareness - enhance decoding skills - improve spelling and writing skills - learn to read cvc words and short cvc decodable stories ================ I am looking forward to seeing you in class soon!
