Do you love Science? In this Ongoing Class, learners will explore a range of Science subjects in a fun and interactive way. This course aims to provide meaningful learning experiences for young explorers. Each class will include a range of teaching methods and activities that are designed to engage the learners in both a hands-on and minds-on way. Classes will include experiments, Q&A, quizzes, games, worksheets, videos and much more. Some classes will include breakout rooms. Learners will be encouraged to observe, explore, question and share what they learn. A variety of methods are used to support learners and cater for different learning styles and needs. What is taught in this course? Week of 1/4/24 - What is Paleontology? - study of prehistoric life Week of 8/4/24 - What is Paleontology? - fossils, fossilization processes, and the fossil record Week of 15/4/24 - What is Paleontology? - Hands-on activity: fossil excavation simulation or fossil identification game Week of 22/4/24 - Types of Fossils - different types of fossils, including body fossils, trace fossils, and petrified wood Week of 29/4/24 - Types of Fossils - common fossils found in various geological formations Week of 6/5/24 - Types of Fossils - Fossil hunting field trip or virtual fossil exploration activity Week of 13/5/24 - Dinosaurs: The Mesozoic Era - dinosaurs, their classification, and evolutionary adaptations Week of 20/5/24 - Dinosaurs: The Mesozoic Era - dinosaurs habitats, behaviors, and extinction theories Week of 27/5/24 - Dinosaurs: The Mesozoic Era - Dinosaur dig simulation or virtual tour of dinosaur fossil sites Week of 3/6/24 - Ice Age Megafauna: The Cenozoic Era - Ice Age mammals like mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and giant sloths Week of 10/6/24 - Ice Age Megafauna: The Cenozoic Era - Pleistocene epoch and Ice Age environments Week of 17/6/24 - Ice Age Megafauna: The Cenozoic Era - Hands-on activity: reconstructing Ice Age habitats and creating dioramas Week of 24/6/24 - Marine Life: Paleozoic and Cenozoic Eras - ancient marine organisms like trilobites, ammonites, and marine reptiles Week of 1/7/24 - Marine Life: Paleozoic and Cenozoic Eras - marine ecosystems and the evolution of marine life Week of 8/7/24 - Marine Life: Paleozoic and Cenozoic Eras - Fossil casting workshop or virtual marine fossil exploration activity Week of 15/7/24 - Plant Life Through Time - prehistoric plants, including ferns, cycads, and early trees Week of 22/7/24 - Plant Life Through Time - plant evolution and their role in shaping ancient ecosystems Week of 29/7/24 - Plant Life Through Time - Hands-on activity: creating fossil plant impressions or growing prehistoric plants from seeds Week of 5/8/24 - Human Evolution - human ancestors, early hominids, and hominin species Week of 12/8/24 - Human Evolution - fossil evidence for human evolution and migration patterns Week of 19/8/24 - Human Evolution - Virtual tour of human evolution exhibits in museums or anthropological sites Week of 26/8/24 - Microfossils and Micropaleontology - microfossils like foraminifera, diatoms, and pollen grains Week of 2/9/24 - Microfossils and Micropaleontology - significance of microfossils in paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Week of 9/9/24 - Microfossils and Micropaleontology - Microfossil microscopy lab or virtual micropaleontology workshop Week of 16/9/24 - Paleontology in Pop Culture - paleontology in movies, TV shows, and literature Week of 23/9/24 - Paleontology in Pop Culture - misconceptions and stereotypes about dinosaurs and paleontologists Week of 30/9/24 - Paleontology in Pop Culture - Movie night featuring dinosaur documentaries or Jurassic Park films followed by discussion. Week of 7/10/24 - Careers in Paleontology and Paleontology in Action - careers in paleontology, including fossil preparators, researchers, and museum curators Week of 14/10/24 - Careers in Paleontology and Paleontology in Action - Virtual interview with a paleontologist or behind-the-scenes tour of a paleontology lab Week of 21/10/24 - Careers in Paleontology and Paleontology in Action - Presentation or creative activity inspired by a favorite topic in paleontology We look forward to being part of your learning journey!
