Do you love Science? In this Ongoing Class, learners will explore a range of Science subjects in a fun and interactive way. This course aims to provide meaningful learning experiences for young explorers. Each class will include a range of teaching methods and activities that are designed to engage the learners in both a hands-on and minds-on way. Classes will include experiments, Q&A, quizzes, games, worksheets, videos and much more. Some classes will include breakout rooms. Learners will be encouraged to observe, explore, question and share what they learn. A variety of methods are used to support learners and cater for different learning styles and needs. What is taught in this course? Week of 1/4/24 - What is Astrophysics? - astrophysics as the study of the universe and its celestial objects Week of 8/4/24 - What is Astrophysics? - basic astrophysical concepts, such as the electromagnetic spectrum, cosmic distances, and astronomical units Week of 15/4/24 - What is Astrophysics? - Night sky observation: identifying constellations and observing celestial objects using binoculars or a telescope Week of 22/4/24 - The Solar System - Sun, planets, moons, asteroids, and comets within our solar system Week of 29/4/24 - The Solar System - planetary orbits, sizes, compositions, and characteristics Week of 6/5/24 - The Solar System - Solar system model-making activity: creating a scale model of the solar system Week of 13/5/24 - Stars and Stellar Evolution - stars, their life cycles, and evolution Week of 20/5/24 - Stars and Stellar Evolution - stellar birth, nuclear fusion, and death processes Week of 27/5/24 - Stars and Stellar Evolution - Star classification activity: classifying stars based on their spectral types and luminosity Week of 3/6/24 - Galaxies and Cosmology - galaxies, including types, sizes, and structures Week of 10/6/24 - Galaxies and Cosmology - universe's large-scale structure, dark matter, and dark energy Week of 17/6/24 - Galaxies and Cosmology - Galaxy classification project: researching and presenting on different types of galaxies Week of 24/6/24 - Black Holes and Neutron Stars - black holes, neutron stars, and other exotic celestial objects Week of 1/7/24 - Black Holes and Neutron Stars - physics of black holes, event horizons, and gravitational singularities Week of 8/7/24 - Black Holes and Neutron Stars - Black hole simulation activity: modeling gravitational lensing and spacetime curvature Week of 15/7/24 - Exoplanets and Astrobiology - exoplanets, their discovery methods, and potential habitability Week of 22/7/24 - Exoplanets and Astrobiology - astrobiology and the search for extraterrestrial life Week of 29/7/24 - Exoplanets and Astrobiology - Exoplanet detection activity: analyzing light curves to identify exoplanets using transit method data Week of 5/8/24 - The Big Bang and Cosmological Models - Big Bang theory and the origin and evolution of the universe Week of 12/8/24 - The Big Bang and Cosmological Models - cosmological models, including the expanding universe and cosmic microwave background radiation Week of 19/8/24 - The Big Bang and Cosmological Models - Cosmic timeline project: creating a timeline of the universe's history from the Big Bang to the present Week of 26/8/24 - Observational Astronomy - astronomical observation techniques and instruments, including telescopes and observatories Week of 2/9/24 - Observational Astronomy - data analysis and interpretation in observational astronomy Week of 9/9/24 - Observational Astronomy - Telescope observation session: observing celestial objects using a telescope and recording observations Week of 16/9/24 - Space Exploration and Missions - space exploration history, milestones, and future missions Week of 23/9/24 - Space Exploration and Missions - spacecraft, satellites, and robotic missions to explore the solar system and beyond Week of 30/9/24 - Space Exploration and Missions - Mission design project: designing a hypothetical space mission to explore a celestial object Week of 7/10/24 - Careers in Astrophysics and Astronomy - careers in astrophysics, astronomy, and space science Week of 14/10/24 - Careers in Astrophysics and Astronomy - Virtual interviews with professionals working in astrophysics-related fields Week of 21/10/24 - Careers in Astrophysics and Astronomy - Researching a career in astrophysics or astronomy and presenting findings to the class We look forward to being part of your learning journey!
