Experiencia de clase

We'll have a little "fishing talk" as we introduce ourselves to see if any of the children have used jointed fishing lures before, but fishing experience is not necessary to be successful with this drawing lesson. I'll show them some of my fishing lure paintings to inspire them. Then I'll explain that underneath all the paint is a drawing and that I'll be walking them through the steps of how to specifically draw a single-jointed glide bait fishing lure while I draw along with them. We'll discuss the parts & purpose of jointed fishing lures as we draw and encourage student participation & to even show us one of their own jointed fishing lures if they have one. We'll create at least 1 drawing in this class. I will lead each child step-by-step through a single jointed fishing lure drawing first to focus on the special techniques that create that 3D look where the joint connects the 2 parts. After we finish the pencil step of our drawing, students will add color using Colored Pencils, Twistables or Crayons while I demonstrate some blending, highlighting & shading techniques. I'll give them some color choice tips to think about as they select their colors for each lure. We'll be sure to stop several times throughout the class to show each other our progress and to celebrate and encourage each other along the way and at the end of our class. If time allows, your child may even want to add a background or even start another drawing to try a multi-jointed lure to finish independently after class!
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn how to draw a single-jointed fishing lure and how to apply that to a multi-jointed fishing lure. While we draw them, your child will also learn about the most common parts of a fishing lure as well as many optional parts, too. In the final step of adding color, students will learn about blending, highlighting and shading techniques. Other than drawing skills, your child will learn about the purpose of a jointed fishing lure and how to recognize one.

Lista de útiles escolares
pencil, eraser, sharpener
at least 1 piece of drawing paper or a sketchbook or even a sheet of copier paper will work
crayons or colored pencils (or even the twistable style of either of those)

Optional Drawing Supplies: silver or gold colored pencils or silver or gold metallic pens (for the metal parts of the lures) and possibly a white gel pen for any reflections of light on the lure

Optional prop or reference for your child (if he or she already has one): Your child may want to show us his or her own jointed fishing lure sometime during our class, but we want the children to be safe and not get cut by accidentally touching the sharp part of a hook. So it would be safer if the lure is still in a package or box that has a transparent side to see through while still protecting your child from any cuts. If you believe it is safer for your child not to have access to an actual lure during our class, please do not allow him or her to have one. We'll leave that up to the parents to decide. Thank you!

Hi, I'm Susan Garrison, a professional artist who also loves teaching kids! I've been drawing & painting all my life and teaching children for the past 3 decades. After earning my BS Degree in Art Education K-12 from Middle Tennessee State University, I've enjoyed teaching children 2D & 3D art lessons at my own art studio, online, and in public and private schools in grades K-12 in Tennessee and South Carolina. One of my specialties has been curriculum development at each of those schools. On weekends, my husband and I even work as a team to DJ weddings and receptions.

I love breaking art projects down into bite-size pieces of simple lines & shapes for children as I lead them through the lesson step-by-step, while still encouraging options along the way so that every piece is unique. Choosing a variety of my classes will help your child develop skills and techniques for creating realistic pieces as well as tap into & build upon the beauty of his or her imagination & creative mind. My class offerings include a variety of styles & use many types of art tools & surfaces. Some classes focus on famous artists & their styles to inspire our artwork. Blending those experiences help form a well-rounded young artist.

I delight in helping children enjoy the whole creative process that leads to a lifetime of creativity and not just the end results of a single painting. A child's imagination is valued greatly and will be encouraged in our lessons.
