Are you looking for a class about legos and reading all in one place?
Brick by Brick, A Snappy Idea, Lego Falls Apart, Beyond the Brick.... these are the titles of just a few of the chapters in the wonderful nonfiction chapter book, From an Idea to Lego! Lego is one of the most popular children's toy, and the history is fascinating. 

Learners will grow their reading comprehension, vocabulary, and creative thinking skills as we study an engaging and informative novel. This book is full of text features, pictures, and so much more that your learner is sure to love!

Class Structure:
-This class is an 7-week FLEX class with pre-recorded instructional videos and directions. There will be NO LIVE meetings for this course, but students will engage with others through discussion. 
-Learners will read through the novel, From an Idea to Lego, in 7 weeks following the pre-determined schedule. Each week students will read 1-2 chapters of the book (between 10-25 pages) Students are welcome to read ahead if they'd like! Learners will need their own copy of the book.
-Each week, students will watch a video that includes directions and explanations about the week's tasks as well as any teaching over reading and vocabulary techniques and strategies.
-Handouts will be provided for students to complete each week and assignments will be turned in. Teacher will provide feedback for students.
-Occasionally, videos will be provided for students to watch from Youtube or other sites that describe more about Lego as a supplement to student learning.

Interaction:
-For each chapter of the book, students will be encouraged to generate reading responses before, during, and after they read. An instructional video will be provided to teach students how to write meaningful responses using prompts. This piece is optional.
-Students will complete a chapter comprehension check activity at the end of each chapter to assess reading comprehension. Students are encouraged to use the book to help them with this to practice finding and using text evidence. 
-Each week will include a reflection activity that students will share with the class. This reflection will allow students to practice making inferences and connections to the text. Many of the reflections apply to their lives and provide the opportunity for students to think beyond the text.
-Each week includes an extension activity to apply new learning. Some of these extension activities include designing a factory blueprint, building a brand name, creating a product survey, and more! 

Schedule:
Week 1: Students will read chapter 1 (10 pages) and familiarize themselves with the layout of the course and activities. Students will watch introductory videos and learn how to write meaningful reading responses. Students will design a factory blueprint in response to their reading.
Week 2: Students will read chapters 2-3 (19 pages) and they will build a brand name.
Week 3: Students will read chapters 4-5 (24 pages) and they will complete an activity about product packaging.
Week 4: Students will read chapters 6-7 (18 pages) and create a travel plan for a trip to LegoLand!
Week 5: Students will read chapters 8-9 (12 pages) and students will generate ideas for themed Lego sets and movies.
Week 6: Students will read chapters 10-11 (15 pages) design a Lego display in a store!
Week 7: Students will read the Timeline and How Bricks are Made ending sections (7 pages).

A flex course allows learners to cover material during a time that is convenient for them each week.  Students are encouraged to check in with the teacher weekly via the Outschool classroom, which will allow for more engagement between the teacher and learner.  Students can collaborate with their peers by replying to the announcements and lesson postings in the Outschool classroom.

-Parents may need to assist students with navigating to external websites or printing for comprehension checks, as needed. -Kahoot will be used to comprehension and vocabulary activities: no account is needed for this. -Google Form will be utilized for comprehension checks: no account is needed for this as email addresses won't be collected. -Google Slides will be utilized for teaching purposes during instructional videos or self-paced lessons. -Youtube will be utilized during instructional pre-recorded videos. Students will use the links provided to watch my teaching each week.

Mrs. Blake graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor's degree in early childhood education. Following graduation, Mrs. Blake earned her Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction. While earning her degrees, Mrs. Blake was a substitute teacher for a variety of grades and a personal nanny for a family. After completion of both degrees, Mrs. Blake became a Texas certified teacher and ESL teacher. She has taught for over 6 years in the classroom in 3rd and 4th grade as well as tutoring for 10+ years grades PreK through 6th. Mrs. Blake has served on curriculum writing teams, leadership committees, and engages often in professional development to improve teaching abilities and learn best practices. Currently, Mrs. Blake is an in person homeschool cohort teacher for grades 1-4, teaches virtually, and is a private tutor. With ample time spent in the classroom and working with students, Mrs. Blake has a wealth of knowledge for teaching students and helping them grow.
