This class series focuses on the literary devices used by writers across genres to help readers connect to the text. Learning about these devices will help students to understand the literature they read on a deeper level and enable them to apply this knowledge to their own writing. Each lesson will begin with a 15-20 minute mini-lesson, followed by a brief discussion where we analyze why authors use that particular device. The learners will then explore the device further by completing activities together. Some examples of these activities are: drawing figurative language, creating allusions for classmates to guess, and taking part in brief skits to illustrate mood/tone. The class will end with an interactive game (GimKit, Kahoot, Quizlet, Jeopardy) to informally assess understanding of the concept for that day. The lessons are made to stand alone and learners are welcome to join in for whichever lesson they choose. Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have a B.S. in Elementary Education and a M.Ed. in Special Education with a level 2 certificate as a Wilson Reading System instructor (a multi-sensory reading/phonics program). I taught second grade through eighth grade over the course of fifteen years in the public school system. Currently, I'm a homeschooling mother of three.
I have a passion for teaching Reading and Writing and trying to instill this passion in my students. I love the creative side of teaching and enjoy making my classes as interactive as possible.
If I am not teaching or spending time with my family, I can be found with my nose in a book or testing new allergy-friendly baking recipes!
I hope to see your learner in class soon!
