Step 1: Borrow the book of the week from a library (or buy it).
Step 2: Before class, read the story at home.
Step 3: Bring your book to class.
Step 4: Choose an activity to do in class!

Activities (To be chosen by each learner):

ACTOR

1) Act out the story with puppets, toys, props, or yourself using different voices for the various characters.
2) Add different voices and sound effects as you read the story dramatically and record it.
3) "Become" a character with a costume and their voice and way of speaking.
4) Become a news reporter and interview the characters. Have a partner answer as the character or answer the questions yourself.
5) Record or tell a story that happened to you that is similar to the book. Add details to make your story interesting!

ARTIST
6) Make a character mind map or heart map.
7) Retell the story tracing the characters' emotions with emoji art.
8) Draw a comic showing how the character faced and solved their largest conflict. Add a panel to show how they felt after this.
9) Make an illustration, map, or model of the setting.
10) Draw and label the story mountain with suitable symbolic pictures for the beginning, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and conclusion.
11) Draw a picture for each chapter to show how each one adds onto the story and how they connect together.

LINGUIST
12) Choose the most powerful and interesting words and create a word art collage.
13) Find repeated beginning sounds (alliteration), repeated words, or repeated phrases, and use them in a creative project like a song or a poem.
14) Find some creative language that has a deeper meaning, and use it in a creative project.
15) Find descriptive words and phrases that help you to imagine the scene with your imagination, and use them in a creative project.
16) Find as many words as you can with the following suffixes: -ed, -ing, -er, -est, -ful, -less, -y, -ly, -er, and -or. Compare them and decide what these endings mean.
17) Find as many words as you can with the following prefixes: un-, re-, dis-, and in-. Compare them and decide what these beginnings mean.

WRITER
18) Choose a different character to retell the story in a poem or a short story.
19) Imagine yourself in the book. What would you do?
20) Write a song, poem, or character journal entry about the book.
21) Write your opinion about the character's decisions. Would you make the same choices? Why or why not?
22) Write an article teaching about a topic in the book. List any websites or books you use at the end.
23) Research some details about something in the book to add some more details or description.

DETECTIVE
24) Use the clues in the pictures to make conclusions about the characters, setting, plot, and mood.
25) Compare the pictures with the text.

MUSICIAN
26) Choose or write a theme song about a big idea in the book, like friendship, kindness, determination, family, identity, or culture.

THINKER
27) Compare and contrast two characters and their experiences.
28) Make a connection between your life and the character's life.
29) Brainstorm other ways of dealing with the problems in the story.
30) Describe the storyteller. How are they different and the same as the other characters and you?
31) Compare the messages about a big idea, like friendship, in this book with another book written by the same author.
32) Compare the storyline (plot) in this book with another one written by the same author. Track the patterns, similarities, and differences.
33) Compare a big idea in the book, like friendship, with your experiences.
34) Choose a story that is very similar to this one and compare them.

Hi! My name is Alaina Bell Gao, and I am an experienced Canadian English teacher with 15+ years of professional teaching experience. As a dedicated, creative, gentle, and patient neurodivergent teacher, many neurodiverse learners thrive in my classes, including those with ADHD, OCD, Autism, anxiety, and dyslexia. As you can see, I work with learners of all ages and abilities. I have much experience supporting learners in achieving academic and personal success, whether that is entering an Ivy League university, a gifted education program, passing an IB or AP English course/exam, reading branches and early chapter books with excitement, reading a novel with comprehension, learning to love reading for the first time, gaining the confidence to express themselves, overcoming personal barriers to success, picking up a pencil to write and to write with passion, voicing their emotions and experiences powerfully, or completing a large project for the first time. I celebrate every success! 

My classes are very creative and interactive, with an encouraging, caring, stimulating, and inspiring environment, which is full of thought-provoking questions, deep discussions, meaningful connections, social-emotional reflections, interdisciplinary learning, and an international worldview. For most of my classes, we take time to savour the literature and I host plenty of engaging literature circles and book clubs, with an increasing range of multicultural novel options, in addition to the classics and Newberry award winners.

My classes are an enthusiastic deep dive into literary appreciation, close reading, and literary analysis without overwhelming the learners with heavy terminology. (I still incorporate references to figurative language, as well as the reader's response, formalist, historical, socio-cultural, and archetypal lens into my lessons, but this is done in a way that the learners can grasp, even without prior training.) Annotation and research skills are a focus in many classes, too. Additionally, I often talk about the power of a learner's choices and the impact those choices will have on their audience. This is to encourage an awareness of the creative process and of themselves as writers, poets, artists, and creators.

As for social studies, I am fascinated by people and cultures, as I am by stories and histories. Although I am Canadian, I lived in China for ten years, integrated into the culture, studied the history extensively, learned Mandarin, and started an educational not-for-profit organization with my Chinese husband. I am an experienced educator and am trusted by Chinese parents, the Chinese Association of Mississauga, and local teachers to teach Chinese history and culture. I also have friends and connections within many other cultures, so building up global awareness, cultural competence, and empathy is important to me!

Additionally, I care about each learner's well-being, so learners are welcome to bring a snack, drink, or fidget spinner to class if that will help and won't be a distraction to others. Learners are also welcome to take stretching breaks. Please reach out to me for any concerns or accommodations.
