Qué está incluido

16 reuniones en vivo
20 horas presenciales
Tarea
1-2 horas por semana. Homework is considered optional but strongly recommended in this class. I realize that many students take Latin for different reasons - some for a formal class for homeschool credit, others for enjoyment and enrichment - so I don't require homework. I will post recommended assignments as well as assessments in the Classroom periodically, and students are always welcome to submit their work to me for written feedback.
Evaluación
Students will have ample opportunity for self-assessment, and upon requests I am always happy to provide more formal assessment or feedback. I provide optional tests/quizzes in the Classroom, which students can take at their leisure and email back to me for feedback. We also play review games in class periodically, which gives direct feedback.

Experiencia de clase

This course is designed as a continuation of Latin: we will begin our readings at Chapter 11 of the Familia Romana textbook. Though we will do a solid review of Latin 1 content, students should come to this class with a strong foundational base of Latin. This course is the sequel to my Latin for Beginners - First Semester course. For learners who have completed other Latin courses, please contact me to see if the curriculum here is a good match!

In Second Semester Latin, students will learn the fourth and fifth noun declensions as well as several new uses of old noun cases. Did you know that not all datives are indirect objects? You will soon! Students will spend much time with adjectives in this course, learning the full declension of adjectives and the various degrees (positive, comparative, superlative) of adjectives. As always, vocabulary (and Quizlet Live) plays a large part in our classes, as do word analysis and acquisition of English derivatives through our study of Latin. Topics of Roman civilization that factor into our readings this semester include Roman medicine, travel in the ancient world, and ancient Roman education.

Week 1 - Comprehensive review of vocabulary and grammar: all noun cases and their functions; active/passive verbs in the indicative mood; infinitive verbs; imperative verbs; begin chapter 10.
Weeks 2-4 - Chapter 10: Active and Passive Infinitives; Indirect Statement with Accusative and Infinitive; 3rd Declension Stem Change and Neuter Nouns
Weeks 5-6 - Chapter 11: More with Indirect Statement and 3rd Declension Neuter Nouns
Weeks 7-8 - Chapter 12: Fourth Declension Nouns; Dative Case Revisited; Declension of Adjectives; Comparison of Adjectives
Weeks 9-10 - Chapter 13: Fifth Declension Nouns; Accusative and Ablative Time Constructions; Superlative Adjectives
Weeks 11-13 - Chapter 14: Present Participles (includes review of parts of speech - nouns, adjectives, verbs)
Weeks 14-16 - Chapter 15: Present Tense Verbs - Active Voice ALL conjugations
Week 16 - Wrap Up, Review, and Optional "Final Exam"

Hello! I’m Larissa Laver and I’ve been teaching since 2008. I’ve worked with young children through young adults over the years: I have taught Pre-K through collegiate level courses and literally every grade in between at some point in my career. I mainly have taught Latin language from elementary through advanced levels, and occasionally teach Ancient Greek as well. I also teach Ancient Greek and Roman History courses, Classical Mythology, and the Homeric Epics. I have traveled extensively in Greece and Italy, and what I learned on those adventures often finds its way into my lessons.

I consider myself a lifelong learner and am always digging deeper to discover more about the world we live in, its history, peoples, languages, religions, cuisines, and more! I also love when my students challenge me with their amazing questions and observations. I spend much time reading and researching in the hopes of being a better citizen of the world and educator.

When I'm not engaged in academic pursuits, I spend my time with my amazing husband. Together we love to travel, play tennis, and hang out with our pet chickens! When I'm on my own, I love kickboxing, yoga (sometimes outside with the chickens!), and gardening (also with the chickens).
