There are so many good reasons to learn Latin. Latin helps students build vocabulary, a real plus when it comes to college entrance exams. Latin also helps students to lay a firm foundation before learning other languages. Students will be able to more easily launch into learning one of the romance languages like Spanish, French, Romanian, Italian, or Portuguese after taking Latin. This course will work through the middle four stages of the Cambridge Unit 1 Latin book. Students will need to have a copy of the book, fifth edition. Each week the class will work through part of a stage in the book. Students will learn vocabulary and practice translation exercises. Students will use already acquired knowledge to make educated guesses about Latin words. Students will learn Latin grammar through learning parts of speech. Students will also learn about the Roman culture in Pompeii before Mt Vesuvius erupted. Each week students will be assigned videos, homework, online practice activities, worksheets, and a cultural video. Week One: Stage Six. Students will be introduced to perfect and imperfect tense verbs. They will learn about slavery in Pompeii. Week Two: Stage Six continued. Students will continue to learn about past tense verbs They will continue to learn vocabulary. They will learn about slavery in the Roman world. Week Three: Stage Six continued. Students will continue to practice verbs while learning new vocabulary. They will continue to learn about slavery in Rome. Week Four: Stage Seven. Students will continue to practice the Latin tenses. They will concentrate on listening and comprehension exercises. Students will learn what the Romans thought of the after life. Week Five: Stage Seven continued. Students will continue to practice the Latin tenses. They will concentrate on listening and comprehension exercises. Students will learn about the death and burial of the Roman elite. Week Six: Stage Seven continued. Students will expand their vocabulary with new stories. They will learn how gladiator fights began. Week Seven: Stage Eight. Students will practice identifying which person performed an action. They will learn about gladiators. Week Eight: Stage Eight continued. Students will look at the accusative form of nouns. They will also learn about comparative and superlative. They will tour the Colosseum in Rome. Week Nine: Stage Eight continued. Students will continue to practice Latin using translation exercises. They will learn about gladiators fight in Latin. They will tour the Colosseum underground. Week Ten: Stage Nine. Students will add to their knowledge about person and verbs. They will tour the baths at Carcalla. Week Eleven. Stage Nine continued. Students will practice subject and verb agreement with more persons. They will tour one of the baths at Pompeii.
