This class is for students who want to keep Latin skills fresh over the summer and grow stronger in one or more areas of grammar/vocabulary. It is also a good refresher course in preparation for further study in the fall. Students should own and have completed Unit 1 of the Cambridge Latin Course, either with me, with another instructor, or through independent study. Each week we build up expertise in a different topic. Cultural background, including video segments, will strengthen interest, engagement, and retention. Student input will help determine the balance between structured exercises, mnemonic devices, ancillary materials, and one-on-one challenges. Student input will also help guide specific emphasis on grammar topics. The general outline plan is: WEEK 1 - basics of sentence structure, parts of speech, and cultural context. WEEK 2 - verbs in the present, perfect, and imperfect tenses. WEEK 3 - noun cases (nominative, dative, accusative). WEEK 4 - pronouns, interrogatives, and more complex grammatical structures such as intransitive verbs with dative and comparative adjectives. ALL WEEKS - new material about characters and historical themes, providing richer perspective on the lives of Caecilius, his family, and the other residents of Pompeii.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will improve command of Latin translation skills, preparing them for more advanced study. Strengthened vocabulary and grammar knowledge will also provide a firm foundation in English and other languages.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have been teaching Latin, English, and Social Studies in the classroom and online for more than a decade, and editing/tutoring for even longer. The most important goal for me is to help students find a personal connection with the topic, whether it is Latin vocabulary, world history, or Ancient Greek philosophy. Fun lessons result in closer examination of concepts and better retention. I use games, pop culture references, mnemonics, and role playing to immerse students in the subject. As co-director of a private summer academy, I enjoyed developing curriculum that seemed like recreation while delivering substantial core-aligned material.
My teaching arsenal is filled with elements from all over: souvenirs from my European travels, current news headlines, pictures and anecdotes of my dog, even stuffed animals. Though my students have won awards and scholarships for their achievements in the subjects I teach, I consider the true measure of success to be the enthusiasm for learning they carry with them even after the course has ended.
