Students will study the classic short story "Lather and Nothing Else" by Hernando Tellez in a group setting. During this short session, students will read this critically acclaimed literary piece and learn about the author and the history that led to its creation. How is the class structured? The instructor will introduce students to the story, the author, and related historical facts during the live sessions of the class. Students will be encouraged to talk and share their opinions and perspectives on the piece. Students will also be able to ask questions of the instructor and classmates. In addition, students will have an opportunity to share their out-of-class assignments with peers. There are hands-on interactive notes (also known as foldable) and guided writing practice during this class. Course Breakdown This course consists of two live meetings over one week. Live session 1: Before the session, students receive optional information on literary conflict types to prime for the live lesson. During the live class, students will - Read the short story - Focus on the types of conflict presented in the story. Students will take interactive notes on conflict. - Complete an argumentative exercise. Students will find both "pros" and "cons" of the same situation. - Discuss and react to the story. - Receive a short writing assignment. Live Session 2: Before this live session, students will view a short tutorial that demonstrates how to complete their writing assignment. Students will also have access to an interactive check to demonstrate comprehension of the story and preview information on the author. During the live class, students will - Share their written assignment responses with others - Learn about the author and the historical events that inspired this story. - Discuss and react to the story. - Complete a short creative writing piece. What is your teaching style for this? How much will they interact? How will you teach? Questions and materials designed specifically for this short story are used to guide the class. Students will not be required to learn new material outside of class. The story itself and all important concepts for this class will be presented live by the instructor. Questions for discussion will both allow students to demonstrate reading comprehension and express personal opinions. The instructor will provide students with a short assignment to complete between live lessons. The instructor will provide a tutorial video to review the directions for the assignment, which students can watch at leisure. Any required experience or knowledge learners need? No in-depth academic background knowledge is needed to participate in this class. Students should be reasonably comfortable with technology to participate in any online interactive items during the course, like polls or group games.

This story includes thoughts of violence--specifically assassination. Non-descriptive reference is made to mutilated bodies and execution. None of these references are described or lingered on for long periods.

Students will need to print pages for their interactive note-taking and the writing assignment. Students might also find it helpful to have colored pencils or highlighters as well. The students will be provided with a copy of the story during the first live session.

Yolanda Newton is a licensed teacher with over 15 years of instructional experience, including middle and high school English Language Arts, and specific experience teaching this novel. Her academic background includes sociology, history, women's studies, teaching theory, and Distance Learning Education. Mrs. Newton has taught History, Sociology, and English Language Arts for high school-level students in a traditional classroom setting and online. Her experience includes working with Gifted students, multi-exceptional students, and special education. She continues to improve and grow as an educator and student and is currently enrolled in post-graduate classes to sharpen her skills in Distance Education.
