Lady Jane Grey's great-grandfather was Henry VII of England. Her grandmother was the sister of King Henry VIII. In July of 1553 she was declared Queen of England, but her reign would last for only nine days. In this class you'll learn not just about Lady Jane Grey but about the others who orchestrated her accession to the throne. It would not have been Jane's idea to declare herself queen. You'll learn about the Protestant advisors to King Edward VI who urged Edward to to declare Jane his successor, so as to ensure the throne remain in the hands of the Protestants. Some were motivated by economic reasons! We'll also talk about why Jane was not killed outright when Mary Tudor took the throne, and what it was that lead Mary Tudor to order Jane's execution.

There may be brief, non-explicit mention of people being tortured. There may be some discussion of King Henry VIII's marriages and the accusations of bigamy and incest that were made around his first two marriages.

Tudor England has always fascinated me, but I became interested in Lady Jane Grey while doing research for my class on pirate history. Many of her supporters were investing in an expedition to send a ship south to Africa at the point in which Edward VI was dying. Such a business opportunity would become illegal under the reign of Mary Tudor, because it contradicted a Catholic understanding that the Spanish and the Portuguese were to split the southern seas between them without worries about other European competition. Reading about that got me curious about the other political and economic implications of the Edward's death and I turned to academic sources to find more information.Reseñas
