Habari gani! "Kwanzaa - An Exploration of the Celebration of African American Culture" is an informative one-session, 50-minute course that highlights the history of Kwanzaa, its connection to African and African American culture, and the ways this holiday is celebrated globally today by millions of people of African descent. The session kicks off with a brief history of Kwanzaa in the United States. Students will note the timeline between the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s and Kwanzaa. Students will learn about the founding of Kwanzaa, the seven principles of Kwanzaa, how to prepare for a Kwanzaa celebration, and the Swahili words used during the celebration. As a group, we will read and analyze a poem about Kwanzaa. To close the session, students will participate in a guided poetry writing activity.
