Knowledge Is Power 101: How Drugs and Alcohol Affect Your Body is an educational elective designed for students in 4th or 5th grade. This class covers a variety of topics about drugs and alcohol, including: -A brief introduction for students who have never heard of them -A deep dive into different types of drugs and how they affect your body, life, and those around you. -Exploring addiction from what causes it to how it looks and common treatments. The structure for this class is simple. Each lesson starts out with a reading assignment. The reading assignments are a couple of paragraphs long and designed so that students with an average 4th-grade reading level will be able to read and comprehend them. Then there are some video lessons, many of them animated. However, some are talking videos from experts on the subject, like doctors, people who have recovered from addiction, and news clips. Finally, each week, there is a simple assignment that should take your learner at most 25 minutes to complete. These are written or printable assignments with creative elements. This class is set up to be self-paced, so your learners can work through the material however quickly or slowly they need to. I will be available via messaging if there are any questions about the lessons. This class is designed to be four weeks long, with reading, video, and activity lessons every week. While your learners can take this class by themselves, I highly recommend that a parent or guardian take it with them. This is a great way to open up conversations with your child about drugs and alcohol before they are exposed to it in life. Statistically, kids first encounter drugs among their peer groups when they are 12. This class is a great way to open up parent-child conversations early and help set your learner on a path to a great life. ***Nothing in this class should be taken as medical advice. If you suspect that your child has a problem with drugs, reach out to a therapist and/or your child's doctor.***
Metas de aprendizaje
Statistically, kids who try drugs try them first by age 12. The goal of this course is to equip kids with knowledge about drugs and alcohol so they can make smart, educated decisions if they are offered these substances in real life.

Introduction to Drugs and Alcohol
This lesson covers five statistics on how drugs and alcohol use affect society at large. It also has an assignment which gets the baseline of what your learner already knows about drugs and alcohol. Some of their current knowledge might surprise you.
This first lesson is designed to be brief so that you can ease into the course.

Lesson 2 strives to answer the questions: What are drugs and Alcohol? And why are they bad for you? There are three different readings and videos in this lesson. The first set of readings and videos talks about different types of drugs and gives an introduction to addiction. The second talks about how drugs affect your brain. The third talks about how drugs don't always look like drugs but can be disguised as other things. Finally, there is a recommended assignment for this lesson.
Lección 3:
Marijuana or Alcohol, which is worse?
Lesson 3 discusses marijuana and alcohol and tackles the question of which is worse. There are two readings and two videos with this lesson. In the first one, your learner will discover what both of these drugs are, and which one causes more harm to the brain. Orientación para padres
I strongly recommend that parents take this class alongside their learners. This class contains information about various types of drugs like marijuana, alcohol, fentanyl, and more. It also discusses drug use, addiction, and recovery. Finally, it talks about how drugs affect your body. Though it is explained at a level that most 4th and 5th graders will be able to understand, it is beneficial for your relationship with your learner to open up a conversation about topics like drugs and alcohol from a young age. This class acts as an icebreaker for such discussions.

This class was created using a combination of research and lived experience. I have a master's degree in Instructional Systems and Learning Design with an emphasis on creating online education. This course was created by researching experts and discussing the content with a drug rehabilitation officer. I was raised by a drug rehabilitation officer and have learned a lot of valuable information about drugs, alcohol, and the addiction recovery process from him.
