In this one-time lesson, we will learn about King Tutankhamun. Who was he? Who was his father, Akhenaten? What do we know about King Tutankhamun’s tomb and mummy? I will begin the class by asking the learners what they know about King Tut and open the conversation by looking at slides. We will look at a map to locate the important sites in the story of this incredible pharaoh. I base my lessons on scholarly and archaeological publications to show the learners the evidence and facts that scientists have gathered so far, and I use a number of slides from my own collection or from archaeological excavations and museum collections to support the arguments and theories. Throughout the class, we will ask the following questions: • What does the archaeological record tell us, including the notes by Howard Carter? • Are other ancient sources available? • What scientific techniques may be helpful in our understanding of Egyptology? • How do we interpret archaeological material? • Can there be more than one theory? The learners will be encouraged to look, question, and share their conclusions just as archaeologists and scientists do, based on the archaeological evidence presented.

Necesidades de aprendizaje
Although this class is not designed specifically to support unique learning needs, I do take the individual needs of my learners into consideration and may alter my lesson to support special requests.
Orientación para padres
The field of archaeology involves the study of burial practices. When a parent registers a learner, I send a personalized message and ask if the learner is prepared to see mummies or skeletons. I also always put a warning note on my slides when I am about to show remains; therefore, the learner has the option to look away until I am done with the image.
Lista de útiles escolares
A one or two-page handout will be provided to the learner. On certain occasions, I will contact the parents directly and suggest a YouTube video. I never send links to learners directly.

I will present the class material through the use of slides, both from my own collection and from archaeological excavations and museum collections.
Learners will look at the archaeological material and learn how to interpret it, and discover that evidence can lead to different opinions. In order to refine our understanding of the topic, ancient literary and artistic sources, for example Egyptian wall paintings and reports written by excavators, will be used to support the many theories surrounding the life of this enigmatic pharaoh. The goal is to show learners how to use all this evidence in order to learn about events in history.
As an archaeologist, I base my classes on scholarly texts, scientific secondary sources such as textbooks, scholarly journals (Archaeology Magazine, National Geographic, etc.), and archaeological reports, while keeping the lesson age appropriate. I also use primary sources, for example English translations of Egyptian hieroglyphs, excavation reports, etc. Other visuals than my own are drawn from sites such as Open Licensed Images, Ancient World Image Bank, World History Encyclopedia, the New York Public Library Digital Collection, and Public Domain Pictures. All sites allow for free use of images, with credits.
Learners do not need to access any sites during class.
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Maestría en Música o Teatro o Artes desde Queen's University, Ontario, Canada
I am a trained archaeologist, and I excavated at sites such as Mytilene and Kommos in Greece for many field seasons. I have travelled extensively through Europe, and I have taught Greek and Roman art, archaeology and mythology at Concordia University, Montréal. I held a position at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada, where I created and led tours for children on the topics of Greek, Roman and Egyptian archaeology, the Medieval period, dinosaurs and natural history. More recently, I have taught labs on water science and solar energy to Kindergarten and Grade 1 students through Scientists in School. Since July 2021, I have had the pleasure of teaching many archaeology and ancient civilizations classes on Outschool.
