In this six-week course, we will go over each of the topics typically covered in a kindergarten social studies class. We will discuss the topic for each week and the learners will have plenty of chances to speak if they choose to. I love making learning fun, so each week we will either have a game or a craft. Week 1: Being a Responsible Citizen This class will go over basic rules that people follow in a community and how people in a community help one another. We will also discuss different community helpers and neighborhood jobs. Your learner will be able to make a craft where they can design themselves as a community helper. Week 2: Neighborhood and Community Characteristics We will discuss different things that most neighborhoods and communities have (e.g.: hospitals, schools, parks). We will start to discuss different types of road signs and traffic symbols and learn north, south, east, and west. We will also play a game where we design the perfect neighborhood. Week 3: Reading a Map This week we are learning all about the major parts of a map while creating our own! We will learn how to distinguish between land and water, what different landforms look like, and how to understand different common map symbols. We will continue to discuss north, south, east, and west. Week 4: Comparing The Past to Today We will learn how things were done in the old days (e.g.: making their own clothes, growing their own food, using horses for transportation, letters for communication) and compare them to how we do it now (buying food and clothes from the store; using cars, planes, and trains; and cell phones for communication). We will play a game when talking about the old jobs and comparing them to today. Week 5: Historical Figures in American History This week we will be reading stories and learning all about Historical Figures in American History! We will also be discussing different federal holidays and what a person might do to get a holiday for themselves. The students will discuss with each other what they could do to be somebody that future kids learned about. We will be discussing George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., Amelia Earhart, and Helen Keller. Week 6: Economics and Money In the final week, we will learn how money works. We will discuss the different kinds of jobs that people do at work and home and how they can earn an income. We will also discuss that different things cost money. Finally, we will be making our own money.
