Each week students will explore a math tool that will help them understand the basics. Each class will be learner driven meaning students exploration of a topic will drive the instruction. This class will focus on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing all numbers (whole, decimals, fractions, integers) with emphasis on building mental math skills, and learning how to use math tools such as base 10 blocks and number lines to assist them when they get stuck. Every class will be hands on through the use of digital manipulatives or printable ones (your preference). This course is not grade level specific and students only need to be able to count and have a base understanding of our number system to enroll. If your student struggles in math this class aims to fill in gaps with the basics. Please note all games are non competitive. The class will follow the schedule below: Summer 2023 Schedule: Week of July 2: Understanding Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division with Number Lines Game: Solve the Splat Puzzles Week of July 9: Exploring Number patterns with 10 Frames Game: Make 20 Week of July 16: Subtraction Strategies Game: Get to Zero Week of July 23: Word Problem Practice with Addition/Subtraction Game: Student Choice Week of July 30: Multiplication Patterns Game: Close to 100 Week of August 5: Solving Multiplicative Relationship Word Problems Week of August 12: Skill Practice with Non Competitive Games

I am a non traditional teacher, no lectures here!
Instead my classes focus on being:
*Student Centered- they lead the pace
*Critical Thinking -complex tasks are given that may be a bit unusual but will cause students to think deeply
*Problem Solving- word problems to keep concepts in context
*Focus on discovering patterns- patterns is the basis of the study of algebra and higher levels of math thinking
*Students create their understanding versus being told what to think
I am constantly learning how to become a better math teacher! I have a Master's degree in Math Education but I don't believe that means I know everything. In fact I am constantly reading about the brain, and the best ways to teach math. I also am constantly evaluating my classes and content and making changes based on how learners interact with the material.
I have 13 years of experience in Education, and have taught math at all levels including adults.

In my down time, I love hanging with my husband, and two girls. We love to read books, play games and do math together (of course:)
