Through this engaging course students will be able to explore how exploring the structure and function of DNA has led to many scientific studies, technology and advances. Some topics students will cover include:

Week 1:
- DNA and RNA structure- The unique structures of each, similarities and differences.
- DNA Replication and mutations- The step by step process of DNA replication and the enzymes involved. How mutations may occur and the impact it has on the organism. Students will complete practice replication problems.
Week 2:
-Transcribing DNA into RNA- How this occurs on a molecular level. Students will also complete practice problems.
Week 3:
-Translating RNA into protein- A break down of the steps that occur, as well as practice using the genetic code chart.
Week 4:
-Gene mutations versus chromosomal mutations- Flow chart to help differentiate the two. Practice identifying each type of mutation.

By the end of this course students will be able to discuss the significance of the terms DNA and genome. As well as, how DNA is able to carry the information essential for forming a fundamental blueprint of our identity. Students will also be able to describe how mutations may have a negative, positive or no impact on an organism.
Metas de aprendizaje
1. To be able to justify and support the claim that DNA is the source of heritable information.
2. Describe representations and models that illustrate how genetic information is copied and transferred between generations.
3. Differentiate between DNA and RNA.
4. Explain the differences between gene and chromosomal mutations.
