 Week 1
Lesson 1
An Introduction
This week we will look at forensic psychology as a whole. In particular, we will discuss relevant background information about the legal system and the mental health system as well as the ways in which Forensic Psychology is the intersection of both systems. We will introduce terms and concepts that are of importance as a baseline.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Malingering
This week we will discover what malingering is. In particular, we will look at when malingering is likely to occur, what it can look like, and why it is important in the context of forensic psychology
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Competency to Stand Trial
This week we examine competency to stand trial or the concept that in order for a fair trial in the U.S. an individual must have the mental capacity to understand what is presently happening to them. We will discuss how this issue is raised and evaluated as well as what occurs when an individual is determined to be incompetent to stand trial.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Insanity
This week we examine the not guilty by reason of insanity plea. By looking at some of the most famous insanity cases (John Hinkley Jr) as well as some of the most common misconceptions about the insanity plea (how often do you think it comes up in court?), we will cover what insanity is and what happens to those who are deemed insane.
  • Students will become familiar with the concepts of malingering, competency, and insanity.
  • Students will learn about possible career paths within Forensic Psychology.
I have a Bachelor's in psychology with my focus being on forensic psychology and am preparing to do my Master's specifically in forensic psychology. I have extensively studied malingering, competency to stand trial and the insanity plea in the U.S. I have been a tutor for the last 5 years working with high school students.

Detalles: During the first week of classes, students will be given a quiz to measure how familiar they are with the topics covered in class. At the end of the fourth week of classes, students will take another quiz covering course content to measure how much they have learned. Assessments will be taken in class and are required for all students.
Course mentions violent crime, mental illness, and secure psychiatric facilities which may be disturbing to some students. It is not suitable for students under 17 as we will be talking about psychotic disorders (hallucinations and delusions). Violent crime will be mentioned; however, the class primarily focuses on mental illness and legal wording. Discussions of dangerousness and mandatory treatment for those who are insane or incompetent will also be present. Please reach out if you have questions about content. I am more than happy to provide more details.
