Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest dances of India. The name itself means “Dance of India” (Bharat is another name for India). This introduction class will provide a taste of the beauty of this ancient and intricate art form. In this class, students will learn a short history of bharatanatyam, some basic postures and gestures as well as simple steps. They will also learn a short dance based on those steps and movements. I am a patient and enthusiastic teacher. My mantra is that there is no such thing as perfection; only practice. Therefore, I encourage my students to not be afraid of mistakes and to keep trying. Prior experience in any form for dance is useful but not necessary for taking this class.

Safety measures:
1) Dress code: Dress comfortably in a top and loose fitting pants. Avoid tight shirts or tight pants as these will restrict movement.
2) Footwear: Please do not wear socks during the session as this might cause slipping.
2) Workout space: We will not be jumping or leaping excessively in this class. All movements will be slow to medium speed. HOWEVER, please ensure that the space is free of clutter or furniture so the student can move safely and freely. Please avoid carpeted areas to avoid friction while moving.
4) Other: I will provide a 2 min break half way into the session so students can rest. Please keep a water bottle and a towel handy. Parental supervision is advised for students who have never taken a movement/dance class before.
