In this class we will be building upon the basics learned in introductory baton classes. Each student will be taught and supported to their own individual level and skill in a supportive group setting. One baton experience is necessary for this class, as this class will build upon the foundational skills of: Figure Eights, Corkscrews into Horizontal Tosses, Flashes into Thumb Tosses, and Vertical and Horizontal One Spins. (These are all skills covered in my two intro classes: Introduction to Baton Twirling and Tossing Basics and Introduction to Baton Twirling, Tossing and Tricks 2) It is not required to take my first two classes to enroll in this intermediate class, however the skills listed above will be necessary to have a successful class. If your learner has had previous baton experience elsewhere, that is fine too! To teach a skill, I will demonstrate each skill to the students in real time, so they can see what it should look like. I will slow my movements down and describe each part of the movement. Then I will show what it should look like when it is mastered. *If weather or other circumstances prevent me from doing the skill live in class, I will show (live), a prerecorded clip of myself doing and explaining the skill. Then provide live support and answers as needed. After demonstrating and giving the instructions, students will have time to attempt the movement themselves. I will provide feedback and correction as needed, both to the class as a whole, if I see a common reoccurring need in multiple students, as well as one-on-one, if I see one student needs a specific direction. Students will be encouraged to show the skills and tricks they've learned to the class if they feel confident and would like to share. I recognize that some students will enjoy sharing while some may not want to. I will always do my best to be perceptive of your children's preferences while also working to be a big encouragement to them. *As each student will learn at their own pace, they may learn one or several of the below skills and tricks in my class, depending on how quickly they are able to complete each. These are some of the common one and two baton tricks, as well as extensions of some basic tricks your learner may already know. I will support and encourage every student, every class. All are welcome to join in the fun and excitement of one and two baton twirling and tossing!

Orientación para padres
Parents do not need to be present during class but are always welcome to watch. Students will need an open space where they can move freely without hitting lamps, TV’s, siblings etc. An empty basement, garage, or driveway is ideal, but please ensure student will be able to hear on their computer if they choose to learn in an outdoor location. *Some skills learned in this class will require high ceilings, or an outdoor learning space. Students twirling in cold weather situations should consider wrapping their batons with tennis racket grip tape. Please also consider putting a cone or large trash can at the end of your driveway or garage opening, if your student will be twirling in a location where cars park or drive.
Lista de útiles escolares
Students will need TWO weighted metal twirling batons with rubber ends. Unfortunately, plastic toy batons will not work for this class, as they are not weighted and will not spin, fly, or fall correctly. Weighted batons can be found for purchase online or borrowed from a friend. Batons come in lengths of 14- 32 inches. You can find your child’s size by having your child reach their arm straight out to the side (standing in a pose, like the capital letter T), then measuring from under their armpit to their longest outstretched finger- usually the middle finger. Now, add one inch to this number. This is the size baton you will need. Often, when ordering for children, it is fine to order an inch (or two inches maximum) longer than this, as children grow quickly. As a tool for approximating size: I am 5’ 3 and I twirl with a 29 inch baton. My 11-year-old is 5’1 and twirls with a 27 inch baton. My 9-year-old is 4’4 and twirls with a 21 inch baton.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have twirled batons for over 20 years, both in high school as well as at the college level. While completing my Bachelor's Degree, I was the head twirler for three years and a feature twirler all four years of college. I have twirled one, two and three batons, knives and fire batons. I've taught twirling lessons and run twirling camps, for children ranging from 6 years old through 17 years old. I have a genuine passion for the sport of twirling. Over the past 17 years, I've worked with children in many different settings and I have found my niche in teaching.
