Experiencia de clase

Students will learn about the field of interactive fiction. They will also be writing and coding their own interactive video game stories.

An Interactive Fiction Gamebook allows the reader to participate in the story by making choices. The narrative branches along various paths, with different endings to the story. Learners can also include animations, music, and game battles to their stories.

In this class, students are encouraged to write with their own style and their own voice, using their own imagination.

**NOTE: This class may meet once a week for 8-weeks OR "camp-style" in which it will meet four straight days for 2 weeks.**

🚨 Please download and test Clickteam (or Games Factory) App prior to starting the class. The Mac's newer updates have been listing the Clickteam Fusion as an "unidentified developer". If you get this message, it may require a few steps to get it running: https://appleinsider.com/articles/16/04/13/how-to-install-and-run-mac-apps-that-dont-come-from-the-mac-app-store
💡 If Clickteam (or Games Factory) is installed on the same computer as Zoom, it would be easier for students to show what they are doing, if they need help. They could also be able to show their classmates what they created.
💾 See 'Supply List' below for link to download the Games Factory or Clickteam Fusion app.

(Its okay if more than one student shares the same gamebook, as their stories will still be different.)

      Here are other gamebook choices:

✴ "The Forest of Doom" - Students go through a fantasy story in which the hero undertakes a quest through a perilous forest.
✴ "80 Days" - The plot is a choose your adventure story that is based on Jules Verne's 1873 novel Around the World in Eighty Days.
📝 For Homework (optional), students continue working on their stories.

【Week 3】
✔️ Direct Instruction - Students learn how to code their stories on Clickteam Fusion (or Games Factory), using text, pictures, and buttons.
✔️ Students start coding their own interaction fiction story on Games Factory or Clickteam Fusion.
📝 For Homework (optional), students continue working on their stories.

【Week 4 - Week 7】
✔️ Students code their own interaction fiction story on Games Factory or Clickteam Fusion. They can include RPG game elements, if they want. They can share their screens through Zoom, if they need help from the instructor (or would like to share their games with the class).
📝 For Homework (optional), students continue working on their stories.

【Week 8】
✔️ Students share their own interaction fiction story with the class.
✔️ Students are introduced to online websites for making interactive stories.
🎲 GAMEBOOK PLAYING - Students will continue the Gamebook Story from the previous class.

No background experience in coding is required, but helpful.

Much of the class is focused on the story writing aspect of game development than coding. Pictures/artwork for the game are mostly taken from the Clickteam Library or imported from pictures from the student's computer (or off the internet). For a class more focused on game coding, I teach an App Designers class. And, for a class with a more gentler introduction to coding (and students being able to do more in designing their own character art and backgrounds), they can take my Retro Game Coding Class.

This is a LIVE class and is NOT pre-recorded. This class will be presented via camera from the instructor.
He will have one camera at his face and another will be a shared screen where the students can see what he is dong on the computer, so that the student can see the instructor as speaks, and be able to observe step-by-step what the instructor is doing. Students can interact with the instructor, as well ask ask questions during instruction.

Students are expected to communicate with the teacher. Communication, visuals, and hands-on instruction are all the things that I are important in helping the students get a better understanding of the subject.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn to create new ideas through the whole brainstorming process.
Students will learn to select and use appropriate tools to gather ideas/thoughts.

Materials Needed:
✔️ Computer (Windows Preferred, but Macintosh would also work. Doesn't work on Chromebook.)
✔️ *Full* Version of Clickteam Fusion or Games Factory
(Students won't be able to make a full interactive story game with the free version of Clickteam Fusion.)

* If you have Windows, you can also get the full version of "Games Factory" for free, which is an old abandonware version. It looks just like Clickteam, but is missing some new features that the full version of Clickteam has. Here is a link to the download: https://www.dropbox.com/s/k6l689pc764n488/Games%20Factory%202.zip?dl=0

* The Full Paid Version of Clickteam Fusion can be found here: https://shop.clickteam.com/usa/41-game-app-creation

"Clickteam Fusion" Mac System Requirements: OSX 10.9 (Mavericks) to 10.14 (Mojave)
MacOS 10.15 (Catalina) is NOT supported as this is a 32-bit application and Apple have removed support for 32-bit.
Clickteam recommends macOS Sierra or above - It might be a good idea to ttry the free version first to ensure it runs on your system.
An internet connection is required for installation, updates and to download the software.

🎈 Kids Coding Templates - These will be available to download when you sign up for the class.

⚠️ Please make sure Clickteam Fusion is installed prior to class. If you have any difficulties with the installation, feel free to message me.

Hi, my name is Raymond Mullikin. 👋

I am a professional cartoonist and credentialed teacher from San Luis Obispo, California.

I teach classes in Cartooning, Comic Book Printing and Publishing, 2D Cartoon Animation, Claymation/Stop Motion, Toy Figure Design, Video Game and App Coding, Creative Writing, etc.

I am also a professional illustrator/writer and Creative Director for Raytoons Comics. The Raytoons website is at Raytoons.Net. I have published cartoons in books, magazines, newspapers, and e-cards. I am an app designer who have designed my own games and software for schools and Appstores. I have also done past work in animation, creating animated film shorts for film festivals around the world.

I graduated from the University of Laverne with a Teaching Credential (2012) and a BA in Liberal Studies (2009). I also have certifications in Early Childhood Education, Technology and 2D Design. I've worked in education for 20+ years (including a few years in Special Ed) and have been doing contract teaching since 2009. I teach art and technology to children and adults of all ages.

How students approach a learning task can strongly influence the quality of their learning outcomes. For me, my approach is often very hands on (kinesthetic) with a lot of visual examples... That's how I've learned things, with a more creative approach. I have a lot of this in my instruction, with a mix of direct and interactive instruction with lots of Experiential Learning hands on!
It is also important to me to get feedback from both children and parents... Some kids have some very clever ideas! And, in teaching, there is always room for expansion of ideas and improving oneself.

I love drawing, comics, writing, creating my own games, and reading. Pretty much everything that I teach I enjoy and do professionally. I also enjoy teaching and thank all the parents and students willing to give me a try! 😃
