14 lessons//7 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
The Chemistry of Human Biology
This week we delve into the smaller parts of our system...atoms, water, acids/bases, and molecules
Lesson 2
The Chemistry of Human Biology
Our second class of the week will learn about phospholipids, steroids, peptides and enzymes. -Homework this week includes a worksheet and a model of a protein.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
A Look Into Cells
This week, students study the specific components of cells
Lesson 4
A Look Into Cells
This week, students study the specific components of cells. -Homework this week includes a worksheet on cell specifics and making a model of a cell.
 Week 3
Lesson 5
Tissues
his week, we learn about specific types of tissue...how a nerve cell communicates.
Lesson 6
Tissues
As well as how epithelial cells protect the body and what can go wrong when tissues don't work correctly. -Homework this week includes a case study on facial transplants and drawing different types of tissues as seen through a microscope (students do NOT need a microscope...these images can be found online).
 Week 4
Lesson 7
The Heartbeat
Though we have previously covered the cardiovascular system (in Part 1), this week we look specifically at the electrical impulses that create a 'heart beat'.
Lesson 8
The Heartbeat
We will talk about the cardiac cycle and begin to look at and read EKG's. -Homework this week includes an EKG worksheet and the dissection of a sheep's heart.
 Week 5
Lesson 9
The Control of Breathing
Though we have discussed the organs of the respiratory system, this week we look at HOW we breathe
Lesson 10
The Control of Breathing
We also discuss diseases of the respiratory system. -Homework this week will include a crossword and Flash Card activity as well as a research paper on a respiratory disease of the student's choice.
 Week 6
Lesson 11
Kidney function and water control
This week students start by re-learning about nephrons in the kidney, water-salt balance in the body and dialysis
Lesson 12
Kidney function and water control
This class discovers how kidney function affects the body. We will also talk about kidney transplants and living with just one functioning kidney. -Homework this week will be a case-study into infant polycystic kidney disease and a drawing/graphing worksheet of a kidney.
 Week 7
Lesson 13
Glands
his week we focus on the pituitary gland (and human growth hormone) as well as thyroids and adrenal glands. We will talk about homeostasis within these glands and disease that can happen when homeostasis isn't achieved within them. -Homework this week will include a worksheet and poster drawing and research of an endocrine gland of the student's choice.
Lesson 14
Fun Review Game!
Our final class is a fun end-of-the-class review gameshow.

  • Students will be able to explore through lecture, experiments, demonstrations, homework, and discussion the organ systems of the human body.
I was a middle school science teacher for 10 years. I have also homeschooled and graduated my daughter for 10 years. As a public school teacher, I taught Earth Science, Chemistry, Physical Science, Zoology, Biology, and more to hundreds of students. Science is a passion of mine and I find performing experiments both fascinating and illuminating when learning new scientific facts! In this class, students will have ample opportunity to perform their own experiments to reiterate the information they learn in class. I have my Bachelor's degree in Biology/Pre-Med and a Master's in Healthcare Administration. I currently manage a hospital-based sleep lab where we practice many of the things (blood pressures, respiratory issues) we will discuss in class.

Detalles: A letter grade will be given for each homework assignment turned in. Grades and homework are not mandatory but will be given upon request or when work is turned in. A semester grade can be requested by parent/guardian.
Activities are not mandatory and can be adapted to fit the needs of each individual learner. Notes and homework can be digitally manipulated if student prefers, graded or not, no reading out loud in class.
As a dissection is done in class (if student chooses) students need to have eye-hand coordination enough to handle some tools that are sharp. Students need to be mature enough, in parents/guardians estimation, to be safe around sharp tools.
Sheep heart specimen (https://www.homesciencetools.com/product/heart-sheep-specimen/) or can be purchased from other websites.
Computer paper
Dissection Kit (https://www.homesciencetools.com/product/advanced-dissecting-tools/ or can be purchased from Amazon.
Clay/Play-Doh
Plastic bags (Ziploc type...sealable)

Students will be using dissection tools that can be sharp. Students must be mature enough in parent's decision to utilize these tools during class independently. We will also be looking at real images of organs, cells, tissues, etc.
