*FEEL FREE TO REQUEST ANOTHER TIME, I WILL ACCOMMODATE AS BEST AS POSSIBLE In this exciting weekly enrichment club, learners will explore a number of different viruses through biological, chemical, historical, and public health lenses. Each session will cover a different virus, so students can jump in and join any session without needing previous knowledge. This club is so special because not only will students learn about the intriguing world of viruses and vaccines (very important topics in todays age of infectious disease!) but also develop the skills needed to critically examine a topic from a number of different perspectives. This club will encourage your student to draw on both natural and social sciences, and consider a topic from a number of angles. Topics covered with include: - Biochemical structure of each virus - Infection process and how the virus spreads within the body - The history and global impact of the virus - Public health interventions and prevention efforts The sessions will begin with a short lecture (with slides that will be shared at the end as a PDF) before diving into case-studies and discussion. There will be instructor-led drawing exercises (drawing the structure of a specific virus, for example), interactive games of kahoot that have been created specifically with class content in mind, and lots of time for questions, discussion, and engagement. We will supplement discussion with short clips of age-appropriate youtube video explanations, no longer than 3 minutes each. Students are welcome to propose a virus they'd like to learn about and I will work to accommodate all requests. Other viruses we will cover are: - Influenza (flu) virus - COVID-19 - Zika virus - Ebola virus - Rabies virus - Poliovirus - Measles - Dengue - Norovirus (stomach virus) - Chickenpox!

We will supplement instructor-led discussion with various short youtube clips, which will be embedded into the weekly slides. For example, when covering the Ebola virus, we will watch the video linked below, from minutes 1-1:14. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHQUp-R0q9U&t=72s
No external reading materials will be provided or necessary (no books, articles or other sources). However, each week, the students will participate in a kahoot game/quiz, which will require access to the website Kahoot.com
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I am extremely eager to organize this enrichment club. Outside of teaching on Outschool, (where I tutor many students in chemistry and teach a public health course), I work full-time as a public health researcher at a university where I investigate infectious diseases and public health interventions. I have degrees in chemistry (specialized in vaccines & virology, working in a biophysical chemistry laboratory) and medical anthropology -- this course is designed to exist directly at the intersection of the three disciplines.
