Experiencia de clase

Learning to play the piano is a long-term endeavor that I am thrilled to lead you on.
Each week we will approach new concepts and skills and learn songs that will allow you to slowly but surely gain all the knowledge and skills you need to be able to play whatever you want to.

You will receive a video explaining the new concepts and skills as well as demos of the songs for a unit in the Piano Adventures book you are working through. Your job is to watch the video and try to play through the songs before your lesson. Your 20 minutes lesson time is the opportunity to ask questions and get clarity on new skills and songs so you are ready to practice for the next week. You get to set the pace. You can learn all the songs in a unit in one week and move onto the next unit the following week. You can choose to focus on only one or two of the songs and save the others for the next week, but we will discuss and agree upon what the expectations are for each week. Note, if you split a unit over two weeks, there will not be a new video for that week. There may also occasionally be some optional bonus songs that you can work on as well.

Your live lesson breakdown is something like this:
5ish minutes showing off what you practiced during the week. This is your chance to shine! These are the songs you have been working on for the longest. You worked through them on your own, we worked through them together, and you have been practicing them for a week.
The middle 5-10 minutes is prep for the next week, you've already watched the video with the concepts, demos, etc. and now we see what specific things you need help with and come up with strategies and a plan for practice during the week.
The last 5 minutes is intended to be more of your choice. There will normally be a few options of what we can do during this time, but if we had to spend a lot of time back tracking and going over previous material, this is what we miss out on.

Lessons are when you get to learn new things and ask questions. Practice is what you do between lessons. When we go over new songs, the goal is that you understand what the page is telling you to do and know how to do that, not that you can play the song perfectly. During the week, your job is to practice it so that you can play it well at the start of the next lesson. My job is to give you the tools you need, your job is to practice using them.

Because the class is based on individual student progress, attendance is absolutely necessary. If the student cannot attend, please notify the teacher in advance and offer some suggestions for a make up lesson. If student is not in the classroom at class time, the teacher will wait 10 minutes. If student has still not arrived, class is cancelled for the week and will not be rescheduled. If the teacher is notified before class that student will not be there, teacher will try to reschedule lesson within the week.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have played piano since I was four years old and earned a BA in music in 2009. I have been teaching piano lessons since 2008, and immediately fell in love with helping students grow musically and as people. I seek to help my students become independent musicians as soon as possible by teaching music reading and music theory. I see my role as teaching the thought processes to get from looking at a page full of lines and dots to translate that to music at the piano/keyboard. I love games, so try to find ways to incorporate games into the learning environment. Students enjoy a relaxed environment where they can experiment and ask questions without fear of being reprimanded for not knowing or making mistakes, while at the same time learning how to handle and correct mistakes.

In June 2022, I completed by masters degree in clinical nutrition and am expanding out to helping students explore the elements of a healthy lifestyle, specifically encouraging trying a variety of foods that support health.
