👓 This is a SELF-PACED (pre-recorded) class with NO live meetings. Your learner will be engaged through a variety of activities. There are *six* video lessons of approximately 30-40 minutes and a accompanying printouts to work with during class. Advance at your own pace!

🌞 The “Imagine Math” series will introduce young learners to different perspectives on math. It will tap into their imagination as they explore fundamental math concepts and develop flexibility in thinking. Children are drawn into the wondrous world of math!

🌟 "The Story of Place Value" draws from storytelling and images to help children comprehend a fundamental math concept.

🤸‍♀️ Each class begins with verses and tongue twisters, rhythmic (skip) counting and coordination exercises (speech, hand-eye and midline crossing). This will help the children feel fully awake and enthusiastic, and keep them motivated throughout class. Once seated, children practice reading large numbers and can work up to the millions place. They learn the importance of zero as a place holder.

🪄 The children will then listen to short adventure stories of the math helpers and lively characters. These help children to understand math concepts from a deeper perspective. The events inspire the written math practice. Students will use manipulatives such as popsicle sticks to visually work with the concept of place value. There is also an opportunity for a craft - making their place value castle. Each class, they will put into drawings what they learn from the stories.

🖐 To join this class, students should be able to recognize numbers and count on their own from 0 – 100. They will need to have the printouts ready for class (provided) and would benefit from using manipulatives (see supply list) for the addition and subtraction tasks. Children who have taken "The Story of the Four Operations" and "Multiplication in Movement!" will benefit from this course.

📅
Lesson 1: Introducing the concept of place value through image and story
Setting the scene and meeting the helpers for ones, tens and hundreds

Lesson 2: Furthering the concept of place value
Meeting the thousands helper and her pet (representing the comma)

Lesson 3: Representing numbers in expanded form
Seeing visually how a number is made up of the value of its digits
               Bringing the castle to life

Lesson 4: Addition and subtraction without carrying/borrowing (two-digit numbers)
Hands-on practice to link the abstract numerical process to the place value concept

Lesson 5: Addition and subtraction with carrying/borrowing
Hands-on practice to link the abstract numerical process to the place value concept
Castle craft: making the place value castle with sliding towers to practice reading large numbers

Lesson 6: Comparing numbers and concluding the story
Seeing equivalent quantities; identifying greater than or less than

NOTE: Horizontal format is mainly used to write equations. This invites children to work with the quantities and the concept before resorting to a series of steps (i.e. in a subtraction with borrowing problem: crossing out the number and adding a 1). The emphasis is on understanding what it means before being able to find the answer.

Orientación para padres
The movement activities will improve the children’s ability to balance on one leg. The movements will be done at a gradual and comfortable pace. They will be comprised of the children standing on one leg and slowly tossing a bean bag from the left hand to right hand, and back; tossing the bean bag from the palm of one hand to the back of the same hand, and back; and dropping the bean bag in a straight line from one hand to the hand below, and back. The children will alternate to the other leg and repeat the movements. We will introduce simultaneous skip counting and tongue twisters to allow the children to focus and be present in their body while working with math and speech. During these 3 minute warm-ups, parents could accompany and supervise their children. Children should have space away from walls and furniture pieces, and footwear which provides good support.
