In this 4 week course, we will discuss a weekly book and share our opinions from each book. Students should read the weekly book before each class where it is being discussed so that they can engage in conversation about the story and events. I will use lecture, slide shows, images, and videos to help students better understand the events being covered in these I Survived books. As historical fiction books, we will take time to see which parts of these books are non fiction and which part are fictional. I love to use discussion in the classroom to assess how comprehension of the material was and where we might need to dig deeper for students to better understand the material. Students will be able to take part in discussion with myself and other students over the course in a true book club fashion. Week 1: I Survived: The American Revolution, 1776. We will discuss Nate's journey navigating the beginning of the American Revolution in New York City. We will see some of the challenges that soldiers faced during the early days of fighting in the American Revolution. Students will be able to discuss their thoughts about the books, look at information from the time period, and talk through common questions about this time period. We will use discussion, a presentation, and videos to complete our class this week. Week 2: I Survived: The Bombing of Pearl Harbor, 1941. We will learn more about the days surrounding the bombing of Pearl Harbor through the eyes of Danny in this book. We will learn more about the important of this attack, what came after this attack, and how our country was changed by it. Students will be able to share their opinions and learn more about this attack through a presentation, discussion, and images that will help them better understand the events. Week 3: I Survived: The Nazi Invasion, 1944. We will learn more about the life of a resistance fighter in the Jewish ghetto. We will learn about daily life, how the ghettos were created, and why this battle was important. Students will be able to share their opinions about the book. We will learn through a combination of lecture, presentation, and discussion each week. Week 4: I Survived: The Battle of D-Day, 1944. We will travel to France to learn more about the Battle of D-Day with Paul. Students will understand more about this event and how it affected the outcome of WW2. Students will see through Paul's eyes the encounter with an American paratrooper and what they did during the battle. We will learn more about this event through a presentation, discussion, and images that will help students have a better understanding of the importance of the Battle of D-Day. No previous experience is required for this class, however students will be able to better engage in conversation and the learning involved if they have already read the weekly book before class.

Orientación para padres
Each of these books follows a student aged character through different battles. There are moments of suspense and violence presented in an age appropriate way by the author. Guardians should be aware and decide if they feel that their students are mature enough and able to handle the discussion of battle related violence seen in the book.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
As a certified elementary teacher, I would use my experience and training to facilitate discussion between students as well as highlight which parts of these historical fiction books are fictional and then what parts are based in true historical fact.
