Haiku poetry is a wonderful vehicle for encouraging student creativity while also enhancing phonemic awareness which is also a strong support for improving spelling. We will look traditional examples of haiku, and then students will create their own. In addition to the fun and beauty of the poems, students will discover several different ways to determine the rhythm of the syllables. For example, we will walk the syllables, clap them, and maybe even sing them as well. All of this is folded into what seems like simple syllable pattern of 5-7-5, but the question remains – can you haiku?
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will have the opportunity to practice determining word syllables, an introduction or extension of the Haiku form of poetry, and then they will create their own poems. This work will help improve or solidify phonemic awareness and an understanding of the poetic form through personal experience.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I love teaching all aspects of history, reading and writing, and math. My teaching includes all subjects in grades 4 through 8 for over 25 years, mostly in progressive private schools. You and your student will find classes that integrate different subjects and disciplines and use interesting simulations and challenges that makes learning LA, SS, and Math. I have found that this approach adds purpose and direction to student learning. Poetry and all kinds of writing are also part of my teaching repertoire. Often my classes integrate several subjects together, so a simulation might include writing, research, and at times working together with other students in groups (or cities, clans, or other kind of group) to create a scenario based on a situation or historical time period. This means that we don't just study the Colonial Era, students first learn an overview of the time period and then select a colonial trade to research. After researching, students write a paper and/or a speech about the trade the studies and students follow it up with making or finding some props to enhance the sharing of their research with others. Then we get together and share our information with everyone as a town!
I believe that all children are ready and eager to learn, especially if there is a connection with the subject and the teacher. Part of my job as the teacher is to find out what makes each child "light up" and use this knowledge as my guide to get them interested in and excited in learning.
I am also a professional classical flutist and I still play, perform, and teach flute lessons. In addition, I am a singer and have sung in several choruses. I love to travel and have visited 46 of the US states - I lived in Brazil for 2 years, and have traveled in Canada, and several countries in Europe as well. I have been fortunate to be able to participate in many wonderful teacher education classes and seminars all over the country - and I just LOVE teaching!
