Welcome to History of the Samurai. This twelve-week course will closely examine the Japanese warrior class of Samurai. Throughout this course, students will learn about how this class of warriors developed, and the impact that the Samurai had on Japanese history. This class will be presented on a weekly basis with the aid of a powerpoint slideshow, as well as various critical thinking prompts to help engage students and facilitate discussion. The presentation shared be the instructor will provide various important pieces of information, as well as educational visual aids designed to help students in understanding the course content. The instructor for this course will lead students in both lecture and discussion as learners explore the important role that Samurai have played in the history and culture of Japan. Throughout this course, students will learn about what Samurai are, as well as what role Samurai played in different periods of Japan's history. Weekly course content will be as follows: Week 1: Definition and Concepts of Bushido Week 2: Beginnings as Horse Archers Week 3: The Kamakura Period Week 4: The Ashikaga Period Week 5: The Sengoku Period Week 6: Sengoku Continued Week 7: Edo Period Week 8: Meiji Restoration Week 9: The Boshin War Week 10: Samurai Legacy Week 11: Populist Bushido in WW2 Week 12: Popular Culture & The Samurai If you have any questions about this course, its instructor, or its content, please feel free to send a message to Military History 101 by Amber Dowdy. No sensitive content will be discussed in detail throughout this course. At times, samurai deaths may be mentioned. Any discussion of the loss of samurai will be historically contextualized and fact-based.

All teachers associated with Military History 101 by Amber Dowdy have a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in history or another social studies related topic. All current instructors have experience in different educational settings including museums and classrooms. Teachers with this organization have presented issues of war and other conflict to students of all ages. All content is historically contextualized and fact-based.
