Join us for a fun and informal book club where we meet once a month to discuss a historical fiction book. Teaching in a conversational manner, I will be fostering a love for books. Students in the class will be asked to think about what they read, form an opinion on what they read, and then share that opinion with others. We will also have fun rating and reviewing each book and comparing them to past reads. Students with a wide array of previous book club experience are welcome. They only need to be open to exploring and discussing the materials and their themes. In this course, students will read and discuss a variety of historical fiction books covering different periods in history. The books for this book club are exciting and well-written and should be a hit for the history-loving student. We will meet ten times and together discuss the historical background for each book and have a lively discussion about the stories themselves. I ask that teens come to the book club ready to engage in the discussions. Book clubs work best with cameras on. The books we will be discussing are: Meeting 1 - Meeting 2 - Symphony of Secrets by Brendan Slocumb (https://amzn.to/3IaKzkF) Meeting 3 - One Last Shot: Based on a True Story of Wartime Heroism: The Story of Wartime Photographer Gerda Taro (https://amzn.to/3nXfOsv) Meeting 4 - Rust in the Root by Justina Ireland (https://amzn.to/41zYY0j) Meeting 5 - The Vanishing by David Michael Slater (https://amzn.to/3o3bbNC) Meeting 6 - Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo (https://amzn.to/3BqsM4V) Meeting 7 - The Blood Years by Elana K. Arnold Meeting 8 - Meeting 9 - I Must Betray You by Ruta Septys (https://amzn.to/3O4L836) Meeting 10 - My Good Man by Eric Gansworth (https://amzn.to/42RvLz8) Please look up the books prior to enrolling your student to make sure the choices will be a good match for your student and your family. All of the books are YA or adult novels and deal with mature themes. Kirkus, Goodreads, Common Sense Media, and Amazon are all good sources of guidance. We need 4 students for this class to run. If you enroll, please share with others who also might be interested. Thank you!
Metas de aprendizaje
Book clubs in middle school/high school are a great way to teach students to form and share opinions with others which are important skills to have as they get older. I run all book clubs so every student is able to answer questions that I pose and participate in the lively discussion. I am also aware that some students prefer to participate through chat than on a microphone. This is completely acceptable. My goal for the students is to get them to share their thoughts however they feel comfortable doing that.

I have been homeschooling my own children for over 15 years. My favorite part of homeschooling has been sharing good literature with my kids and with other homeschooled students in various book clubs I have run over the years. I hope that my enthusiasm for good books rubs off on my students and they take that love with them throughout their lives.
