In this ongoing class, high school learners will help each other figure out how to get un-stuck on their difficult math homework problems. This class is especially designed for students who are frustrated with math, and is open to all high schoolers, regardless of math level. The goal is to learn how to get unstuck, so we may not solve all of the problems during the class. If any of the problems presented to the class aren't solved in the available class time, I'll provide a written solution guide in the classroom discussion area within the next day. Each learner will bring one homework problem that they are struggling with. After brief introductions, we will spend some time looking at each problem. Each learner will share at least one problem. When presenting their problem, the learner will state where in the problem they're stuck ("I don't know how to start", "I can turn the words into equations, but I don't know what to do next", "I get all the way through, but don't get to the right answer. I'm not sure where the mistake is"), and any contextual information that could give clues about how to solve their problem ("this is part of the homework for the section on "systems of linear equations", "I know I need to derive, but I don't know what to do about the tangent", "I don't know what a parabola is and the problem is asking about parabolas"). Then we'll brainstorm strategies that could lead towards a solution. Some of my favorite strategies include "find the first step" and "try zero or one." A student in Algebra 1 can offer strategies that might still be helpful for a student in a calculus class ("what are the variables?" or "what does the graph look like?") and visa-versa. If there is extra time left (because we have fewer learners or because some learners got un-stuck quickly), learners will be able to share additional problems. If there is extra time left after all of the problems have been shared, we'll try to apply strategies from one problem to other problems (sometimes this works really well, and sometimes it is really silly. Either way, it can be a fun way to wrap up a class). Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calc (Trigonometry), Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics This class follows the same format as the "Get Un-Stuck on Math" classes, but doesn't divide students by specific math level. This class is an ongoing version of the "High School Math Homework Club" one-time class, with the goal of giving learners the opportunity to learn alongside familiar faces and not just new ones. Each week we'll cover topics related to the problems that learners bring. Any math topic (from algebra 1 through calculus BC or statistics) could show up on any week. Learners have wisdom and strategies that are applicable even to problems they haven't been taught how to solve yet ("start by making a graph" is a good tactic to try for both algebra and calculus).
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn new strategies for approaching difficult math problems.
Students will have the opportunity to commiserate with peers about being frustrated by their math homework.
