Our time together will be fun, active, and age-appropriate. This one-time hula course will emphasize the hula dance in movement and also share the importance of respecting cultural history. Hula dancing is much more than a sway of the hips. As I incorporate myself modeling and teaching the steps, both footwork and hand motions, learners will be able to follow along through my video slideshow. I find this method of teaching over a screen is most helpful because I am able to watch each learner in their efforts as they dance the moves along with myself on video. I also interact with each learner and provide positive feedback and guidance throughout our time together. Hula is often shared and performed for entertainment (at a Luau or for party celebrations). However, in history and in current times, hula plays a significant role in preserving the history, lineage, culture, stories, protocols, and traditions of Hawai'i. Students will learn a few Hula Basics and gain an appreciation for the Hawaiian Culture. In most Halau (hula school), every class always begins with the basics which are similar to warm-ups. Students are asked to wear clothing comfortable to move in. For example athletic shorts, leggings, stretchy pants, and a comfortable top. You may wear a sarong/pareo or hula pāʻū (skirt) if he/she already owns one. Please pull your hair back away from your face. Pinned back or in a ponytail. Optional is a flower to wear in the learners hair. Please also have a water bottle filled if your child needs a short water break. Hula Dancing is done barefoot🦶️🦶️. Your child should have safe flooring and ample space to move, step, and sway. Your child will learn and practice: Basic Steps, Hand positions, Counting, and Rhythm. Learn Hawaiian words, as it pertains to the hula and culture. Gain confidence and a FUN learning experience. *🌼If you enjoy this class, I will look forward to having you in other courses I'll be offering.
