In this one-time class, learners will be learning about 2D shapes, 3D shapes, recognizing coins and bills, the value of money and making change using an interactive pretend grocery store game! At the beginning of class, the learners and teacher will have a discussion about food and where it comes from. Some discussion questions may include: “Where does the food in your pantry come from?”, “How does food get to the grocery store or onto the shelves?”, “Is the food at the store free?”, “Do we know how much it costs?”. Visuals and pictures of different grocery stores will be used in class. Next, learners will work together to stock a grocery shelf by sorting the different food items by shape and size. (We will review the names and characteristics of shapes as we do this.) Then, learners will take a virtual trip to the grocery store using their pretend digital wallet. We will look at our wallets and identify the dollar bills and coins inside. Finally, we will go grocery shopping! Learners will have the opportunity to choose various items around the grocery store. After making their selection, we will add up the total for all their chosen items. If time allows, we will also practice making change. This class is best for any student ages 6 to 8, or 1st to 2nd grade. Students do not need to know the concepts or topics of the class beforehand. We will learn and review in class. The class materials will be presented via Google Slides and screen shared on the teacher's screen only. Learners will need nothing outside of the Outschool Zoom classroom.
