In this class we will read the myth about Daedalus and Icarus who flew to their freedom on wings made by the master inventor Daedalus. Daedalus had been imprisoned by King Minos of Crete after constructing the labyrinth to house the monstrous Minotaur. We will learn about the geography of the Greek island Crete including its location, climate, wildlife, natural and man-made wonders and we will also learn about the island of Ikaria (home to one of the largest populations of centenarians in the world) which supposedly was named after Icarus, the son of Daedalus who flew too close to the sun and damaged his wings. For this class we will use the Orchard Book of Greek Myths (learners do not need a copy of the book), a slideshow and a Ted-ed video on the myth of Daedalus and Icarus. Learners will get to draw their favourite scene from the story so please bring paper and colour pens/pencils to class.
