In this class, we will not only explore the life and many contributions of Jane Goodall, but also explore the history of animal conservation from the 1800’s, how our perception of animal behavior has changed, the culture and society surrounding the Institute for Research in Tanzania, and what conservationists are doing today. This class will be broken up into 8 week classes. Each class will consist of a 15-25 minute powerpoint lecture that will include recordings, pictures, and film. The remaining class time will be used for a guided discussion over what we have learned and the student’s individual thoughts and opinions regarding the lessons. A pencil and paper are suggested for brief note taking during the lecture, but are not required. These notes are to be used to help the student during the guided discussion. At the end of each class will be a list of suggested homework assignments. These are used to enhance the topics discussed during class. During the last few weeks we will be creating our own observation using Jane's initial techniques, and then using the scientific method. Week 1 – Conservation and animal studies from 1800-1950’s. Week 2 – Jane Goodall's early life – her childhood and influences Week 3 – Meeting Dr. Leakey and working as a secretary Week 4 – Brief history of the Tanzania region, the culture and attitudes towards animals Week 5 – Her first project and the establishment of the site Week 6- First observation – what she learned and how the world reacted Week 7- Her return to England, earning her Doctorate in Ethology, and work with other animals Week 8 - The Jane Goodall Institute for Research and the state of animal conservation today.
